Hi I’m in high school and I’m not very confident in my current grades I’m wondering if these will affect my chances for getting into something like Harvard, Stanford, MIT and university of Alabama.
Here is a little bit about myself:
My current GPA is a 4.0 unweighted and 5.0 weighted. I took 4 APs freshmen year and 5 sophomore year and I’m currently taking 7 APs.
I took the Math and Biology subject tests and got perfect scores.
I volunteer at a hospital and have an internship at a global organization.
My parents are divorced and I only have one family income.
I am also 80% deaf
I am also the president of the eat wise club at my school where we discuss the importance of eating healthy and organic foods.
I’m 50% Hispanic, 25% Native American, and 0.5%Estonian, and the rest is mixed based on ancestry.com
Some feedback would help thanks!
So, you’ve got good grades. That’s about all I can get from your profile. Did you do well on non-subject SATs or the ACT? That’s just as important as your grades. Obviously your GPA and course rigor are good, which you know. But your ECs look severely lacking, and i can’t really predict anything without your test scores.
So, will your grades alone limit you? no, and right now that’'s the only thing I can see not limiting you. Take the SAT or ACT, see how you do on that. Join some more clubs. Volunteer some places. Right now, you look very, very one-sided. I’d say of what you listed, you’d only get in to alabama. Harvard, stanford, MIT all get tons of 4.0/5.0/1600/2400/36 applicants. And they actually deny a lot of them, because so many of them are one-sided. Make sure you’re not just an academic… Clean eating won’t get you in to college.
16 APs through junior year and you have a 4.0? That’s impressive. Keep up the good work and also keep getting some great test scores. Your ECs are a bit generic/light but you have the URM hook so who knows if they offset each other. You have to be registered with a tribe to claim being Native American, btw.
Harvard is not a slam-dunk for anyone. You need to have a diverse college list.
The fact that you have only one family income to count on towards college will definitely hurt you. Most elite schools (including Harvard) expect both the custodial and non-custodial households to contribute towards your education. If your non-custodial parent is not willing to pay, you need to concentrate on schools that will accept only your custodial parent’s household financial statements for financial aid purposes. If you get into Harvard, but your noncustodial parent won’t file financial aid forms or won’t fund their part of your education, your acceptance won’t mean anything if you can’t afford to go.
A school to consider adding to your list if you are a STEM major is Rochester Institute of Technology - as an institution they have a very strong commitment to supporting deaf and hard of hearing students.
Actually, you have two possible hooks: URM and DHH.
What kind of hearing loss? Do you wear hearing aids?
If you have a documented severe to profound loss and have an IEP then you may have a better chance.
Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and ** Alabama**.
Man, Bama has been good at marketing.
Average chances at Harvard, MIT, and Stanford
You’ll get into Alabama
