What are my chances for Stanford, MIT, Caltech, etc.

Your accomplishments are quite impressive, biggestsunsfan! You will undoubtedly get some good offers. Best of luck!

At those top schools, they look at test scores and GPA first. It adds to their recruiting stats. Your SAT is too low for all of them except CP-SLO. The UC’s don’t count freshman and senior grades in their calculation, so you need to figure out your UC GPA.

Your sister became a drug addict and a high school dropout and yet she’s a creative writing major?

@onlythebest13 yeah she took about 4 years to recover and found hope through her writing. She is a very good writer and she has written several pieces about her depression, etc. and they inspired her to go to ASU to pursue creative writing.

@aunt bea if that is the case then my UC gpa is a 4.0. I have gotten all As sophomore and junior years.

Your story is so moving. I am praying that you get into the top schools. Nevertheless, I must say you don’t have to apply only for the top schools in order to do something better in your life. There are many other tier two schools which would accept you and give a full ride

@tryhardalay thank you for the kind words

You have such a unique story! And overcoming all of your familial problems- inspirational.
I feel like you can def get into calpoly. UC Berk match-ish. Stanford Princeton- low reach-ish. And MIT and Caltech would be high reaches. I’m not taking your hook into consideration bc i’m not sure what kind of weightage that adds. your ECs are great. Did you get that 34+ on the ACT? Bc that probably would help.

^Sophia, how do you figure Stanford and Princeton are low reaches? Lol.

@Sophia91397 thanks for your response! And my ACT score comes back in a couple days so im hoping for a high score!

bump…

SAT scores are too low for those high reach schools.

Renomamma- Well I assumed personal attachments is a legacy of some sort an ACT score of 34+. Other than that, she dos ahave a pretty nice GPA, both weighted and UW, and she has great ECs. Yes, they might not be particularly jaw dropping but I think she can make up for that by writing a beautiful essay addressing all the household issues she has to overcome.

biggestsunsfan- NP, good luck:)

Thanks! @Sophia91397‌

@Sophia, I didn’t interpret “personal attachments” to mean legacy. Who knows what that means. I just don’t think it’s possible to say the university with the lowest acceptance rate in the country would be a “low reach” for anyone…exceptions could be those with major hooks, like legacies who have donated huge amounts of money and recruited athletes.

Hey guys I just got my ACT scores back and I got:
34 English
35 Math
29 Reading
29 Science

32 Composite.

I am going to take it one more time to try and focus on my reading and science so I can hopefully bring them up to 33+ which would give me a superscore of 34+. What do you guys think? Are these better than my SAT scores and/or will they help my chances?

I feel like you have a very good chance. i would emphasize your internship at the engineering firm will definitely help. try and make the most out of your experience there. it’ll give you some good stuff for your essays. also your family stories and URM status will definitely help  study hard for that act! good luck!

I think you have a good shot, especially through Questbridge. You are applying to the more selective QB schools, but you seem passionate and your story is interesting. I definitely think you have a shot at getting an acceptance to one of those schools, and you might even get matched if you tried it (take this suggestion with a grain of salt, though; it’s hard to predict matches).

Also, I love Physics too, and I’m from Arizona! I also went to the Stanford Conference from Questbridge. Maybe we saw each other! Are you on the QB Facebook page?

I’d really appreciate it if you could chance me back, too: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1689225-chance-me-noncitizen-in-an-abnormal-situation.html#latest
