Too few or not is just a relative term. It is too few when there are 10-20x more applicants disregarding they admit a couple thousands like Harvard/Princeton or just a few hundred like CalTech.
There are thousands of colleges in this country. The OP is competitive for all but maybe 15 of them. He does not have the very highest stats or super accomplished ECs. I don’t see what is broken about that. What is broken is the idea that only those 15 colleges are worth attending, and that it is a terrible fate to have to attend a college outside that group.
