What are my chances of being accepted into UPitt?

Hi everyone. I'm currently waiting on a decision from the admissions committee for the Fall 2013 (yes, it's late, but they encouraged me to apply; I didn't think I would be able to due to family issues). I want to go there SO BADLY and the waiting is literally killing me. My admissions counselor said I'd know something by next week for sure. One part of me thinks I'm a strong candidate, but then another part is thinking that my standardized scores might hold me back. I'd just like to know your opinion on how likely it is they will accept me. Thanks!

Because you’re transferring in, they’re going to put a bit of am emphasis on your college record which helps take away some of the impact of your SAT. In terms of your SAT, what did you get on the Math and CR sections?

You’re going into neuroscience, so what kind of classes have you taken so far that would be part of that program (i.e. chem, bio, etc.) If you’ve been doing well in those at the college level I think that will help. As for your recommendations, what did you send in? Were there math/science recs or something else?

For my SAT, Math-570, Reading-600, Writing-580.

I’ve taken AP/college Chemistry, AP/college Algebra, and AP/college Finance. In high school, I got A+s on all chemistry, biology, and calculus classes. I excelled at computer science as well, which I think would give me an interesting angle coming into the department. I highly excelled in programming.

And as far as my recommendations, one was from my high school English teacher and one was from a college philosophy professor. I did extremely well in all of their classes and I know for a fact that their letters were very strong. I was supposed to get one from my high school science teacher, but he unfortunately passed away during mid senior year.

You A+ grades in AP Chem and Algebra don’t match the SAT results. What did you score on your AP exams? I would think that if you scored 5s that could help offset the SAT scores maybe??

Hope it works out for you.

Yeah, I’ll be the first to admit that I screwed the whole SAT thing up. I was extremely sick on the SAT day and needless to say flubbed it up a little bit. I applied for my first college shortly after that and got accepted, and didn’t even consider retaking it since I got in to the college. If I don’t get accepted, I’m going to take it again and hopefully raise my score dramatically and apply next year.

In terms of my AP exams, I got a 4 on my chemistry and a 5 on my algebra and finance, so I’m crossing my fingers that it will help my case a little. I did extremely well in high school, I just got a little lost with what I wanted to do with after I graduated and sort of steered off the path a bit. I moved to California and tried to “find myself” for about a year or so haha, so it’s tough trying to get back on course. It’s just nerve-wracking because I feel like I have a 50/50 shot of getting in and the waiting is killing me.

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know I got accepted! I also received an invitation to the Honors College as well!

I’m reading AwesomeOpossum’s thread right now as well to get better acquainted with everything before I move out there on Friday. Thanks!

Congratulations and welcome to Pitt! Let me know if you have any questions :)

How did you get into the Honor’s College (not disbelieving just questioning) as the scores on the school site say that they have to be quite a good bit higher than those you posted? Are the scores on the site just the ideal scores, but you can petition or ask for acceptance with lower scores?
I’d be entering in 2014 so I have some time yet. Just wondering about my options!
Thanks and congratulations…enjoy Pitt and keep us posted on life there!

Anyone can participate in the honors college. It is not a membership-restricted college.

The only restriction is on incoming first-time freshman who must meet certain admission criteria in order to register for honors courses during their first semester. Other than that, it is pretty much up to an individual student’s own motivation and interest to take advantage of the honors college’s opportunities. Anyone can graduate with the Honor College’s BPhil degree as long as they fulfill the criteria.

Because she’s not a freshman admit right out of high school - she’s a transfer student with a college GPA somewhere between 4.0 and 3.7.

Quiet Type is right. After your first year, you only need a 3.25 QPA to be UHC eligible.
