What are my chances of getting accepted to BYU? And what can I do if I'm denied?

You probably won’t hear back until at least the first week of February. Check out the BYU Admissions Facebook page, they answer that question in one of the wall posts: they’re trying to inform everyone within a couple weeks’ time so that they don’t have some people finding out in December and others the last week of February and freaking out about it for 2 months. It makes sense–less angry people and everyone finds out eventually anyway. If your application is in and you’ve applied to the places you want to, why worry about it? It’s done and completely out of your control so you aren’t going to benefit in the slightest by fretting and worrying. Just be patient and forget about it, and one day, you’ll be surprised by an email in your inbox which will let you know, and then it’ll all be over. :)

Me and a couple of my friends are thinking about BYU H together. I lived in Hawaii for about two years and I would really like to go back for college, but I heard that its really hard to get in if your from the mainland, particularly if you’re white. I had some trouble being white at my school when I was there, but not from church. Also I can’t decide if I would then try to transfer to Provo from there? If anyone has any advice it would be highly appreciated:)

I’m late to this thread, but this applies today even more.
If you’re “not decided” you want to go to BYU Provo, I highly recommend you don’t go.
If there’s something about the requirements, honor code, etc., that concerns you–don’t go.
There are thousands of LDS kids who would love to get accepted to BYU Provo every year who can’t get in.

Just wanted to bring this old thread back to life. I posted in here over 3 years ago. I currently attend BYU and absolutely love it. It is well worth it to get accepted here.

I’m a junior and I’m so excited to go to BYU Provo! I’ve known I want to go to school there since I was 10 years old. I’ve been making sure I do everything I need to get in for years haha I’m an early planner. My gpa is 3.96 unweighted and 4.9 weighted. My ACT score was a 32, but I’m taking it again soon hoping to do better. I’ve done a bunch of clubs, am active in the church and have served callings, and even started an organization. I’m pretty confident that I’ll get in, but do you think it’s good enough to get a scholarship? I’m hoping for the Thomas S. Monson scholarship, but idk if my grades are good enough for that.

My son just got into BYU. We are pretty happy.

If you want to go to BYU that bad, then just plan on going. I know 15 kids from my area who didn’t get into BYU–and went anyway. They went to the Salt Lake Center and/or summer sessions and ALL of them got in. Some of them are not that bright, didn’t even do that well in their Salt Lake/summer classes. Not one of them was denied.

Be prepared that BYU is HARD! You’ll be competing with a lot of high school valedictorians and students who were also accepted at Ivy League. Getting into BYU does not get you into the ultra-competitive Marriott school, or college of nursing (among others that require separate admission). I attended both BYU and UC Berkeley and I can say that overall the instruction is better at BYU–they pack in a whole lot of learning and the teaching methods are second-to-none in most classes.

I know most college freshmen don’t know what they want to major in, but it sure makes for better decision-making if you have an idea. For many students it makes much more career sense to get a science/engineering/technology degree at a less competitive school than to go to the “best” school you can get into and, not being able to compete, end up with some fuzzy degree that offers few career prospects, or worse, dropping out with no degree at all like 50% of college students.

Good luck!

PS, those of you writing nasty things about BYU and/or Mormons, maybe you’re trying to be funny, maybe just mean, but please consider that people are posting here because they’re looking for help with some really tough life decisions.
