Hello,
I am a Jordanian rising senior living in the Middle East and very soon i will be applying to Georgia Tech to study industrial engineering. Not sure yet whether i should apply early non-binding action or regular . If i apply regular i will probably have a higher SAT score as i am taking it again, and will have three Sat subject tests. Also, do you think i have a good shot at getting in? My stats are the following:
Weighted GPA: 3.9 (My 9th grade GPA is 3.55)
Sat score: 1820 (will be retaken)
APs:
-World History: 5
-Psychology: 5
-Macroeconomics: 5
-Microeconomics: 5
-Physics 1: 2 (probably will not report)
-Seminar: 3
Ap calculus, Spanish, us government, and research: will be taken in my senior year
-I will have three Sat subject tests for northwestern and the UCs but not Stanford (Physics, MAth 2, and Spanish)
Extracurriculars:
-3 years Varsity soccer (captain for one year) (1 years JV)
-2 years Varsity volleyball (2 years JV)
-Student government: Vice President 11th grade, Perhaps President next year
-Cofounder of a very creative community service project
-Cofounder of school website
-Mun (2 years)
You should definitely apply EA because the admit rate will be higher. There is absolutely no downside to applying EA. If you have no chance they will reject you, but most likely would defer to regular admit. Your SAT score will not get you in, it would have to be 3-400 points higher which is tough to achieve. Have you tried the ACT? Many do better on that. Best of luck to you!
Thanks a lot ! I dont think it is possible to raise my SAT score 300-400 points, at the max 200, however if i apply early decision, which i probably will along with stanford (dont ask me why i am applying to stanford) my Sat score will be 1820. By the way the admit rate is pretty high, around 30%, isn’t an 1820 sufficient? or is it because i plan to study Industrial Engineering?
So are you certain that i wont get rejected early decision? I know you are not a member of admissions council but i am guessing you go there and are pretty knowledgeable.
Thanks again for the help!!
The admit rate for EA is higher because a higher percentage of qualified students apply then. The stats of the admitted students in EA and RD are roughly the same.
@veruca thank you for reply, to be honest at first i was thinking Georgia Tech is almost a fit, however now i am not so sure. My school allows me to apply to up to 10 colleges, so i have plenty of safety.
OP, Veruca is right. I am a parent of a rising sophmore at tech. I have followed this site for the past couple of years and have a pretty good idea of who gets in. This year surprised me a bit with some pretty high stat kids applying RD not getting in. If you take the SAT in October, tech will have the scores in time for an EA decision. My D applied EA and they used her Oct scores. Also, they will super score, taking the best score in each category. They will even mix and match with the ACT if you take that. My D had some moderately intensive tutoring and was able to increase her score by 160 points. They say that they do not take your intended major into consideration. If you are female (can’t tell from your post) that may give you a slight edge. Your EC’s look good and they really like compelling well written essays.
You are not applying ED to tech, you would be applying EA which means you are not bound to attend if accepted. I believe you can also apply ED to another school, but you would have to withdraw your application to Tech if accepted. I think you would have your answer at the ED school by mid December and Tech would post EA results usually first Saturday in January. Check the rules of the school you are applying ED to just to make sure.
