What are my chances of getting into the University of Texas at Austin or Cornell?

<p>Junior in TX
Top Quarter (Hyper-competitive school)
I have a 3.85ish GPA (out of 4)
SAT: 1800 (first attempt) 1940 (second) Hoping for 2000+ (third)
SAT II: History, French, Math, Biology (two out of these choices, will be taking it next year)</p>

<p>Extracurriculars:
- Varsity Ice Hockey all 4 years (assistant captain this year, maybe captain next year)
- Summer Ice Hockey League for 2 years
- Prep Hockey League during Freshman year
- Houston Travel League during Sophomore year. (We traveled to Dallas and Austin throughout the year)
(Yes, I'm very passionate about hockey)
- National Honors Society (Volunteering and Leadership) (Member: 2 years)
- Interact Club (Volunteering) (Member: 4 years)
- Earth Club (Promoting Recycling / Recycling in school) (Member: 2 years)
- French Club (Member: 3 years) I'm Treasurer this year, Vice-President next year.
- YES program (Volunteer Program)
- I've completed 100+ community service hours
- This summer, I'll be volunteering every weekday at the Memorial Hermann Hospital for 3 months. (I want to major in some pre-Med course, and I'll get more than 130 community service hours from that)
-Total community hours are around 250</p>

<p>Curriculum:
At my competitive high school, there are only advanced and honors/AP courses. Advanced are "easier".
I took 1 honors freshmen year, 2 sophomore, 3 junior, and I'll be taking 5 senior year.</p>

<p>AP Exams: This year I'll be taking US History AP, and French AP.
Next year, I'll be taking Bio, Gov't, Human Geo and Calc AB.</p>

<p>Awards:
- 1st Prize for Poetry at Texas French Symposium (State Level)
- 1st Prize for Fastest Skater in ISHL (Hockey League)</p>

<p>Other:
I'm a minority, I have lived in 6 different countries throughout my life (I'll definitely stress that in my essay and talk about being open-minded and cultural), and I won the State Prize for French Poetry during my sophomore year. (If that counts in any way)</p>

<p>What are my chances?

<p>U will most likely get in UT austin… cornell might be a reach.</p>

<p>Cornell is out of reach unless you can get recruited for hockey (which is unlikely for someone from TX).</p>

<p>I think your SATs have to get to at least 2000 for any real chance. Your GPA is strong and your URM status should provide a bump, but even with that it’s going to be tough.</p>

<p>Texas:</p>

<p>You need to talk to your high school’s guidance counselor; on the surface, given the top 7% rule at UT-Austin I’d say you have little chance given your top 25% rank. However, there may be adjustments for the rigor of your school and your minority status.</p>

<p>What can I do to boost my resume? I can’t jump too many ranks now, it’s impossible.</p>

<p>e.c’s are really good! get those SAT scores up, write a killer essay and I think cornell could for sure happen</p>

<p>Cornell:</p>

<p>Your EC’s are fantastic, but you’ll probably need a 2100+ to have a chance, considering it’s an Ivy. And you’re rank would have to be WAY up there. </p>

<p>UT Austin:</p>

<p>Austin doesn’t like the top 10% rule, though I guess it’s now top 7.5% or whatever, but of course they have to follow it, and so the competition is fierce. I had a friend who was 3 people away from the top 10% and she didn’t get in which sucked. But here’s the catch - UT loves EC’s which you have a lot of. In my school, which is also ridiculously competitive, the people who weren’t in the top 10% got in anyway because of tennis, hockey, clubs - stuff like that. So I think you stand a good chance.</p>

<p>To boost your resume, I’d just keep doing well and focus on your EC’s. </p>

<p>Thanks a lot, I’m debating over whether I should get a job this summer or not…
I already have volunteering at the hospital: 3 hours/weekday, and then college essays, and Biology AP chapter outlines, so I’m not that sure. Would getting a job REALLY boost up the resume?</p>

<p>Ummm…I don’t think jobs are going to boost your resume all too much if you’re looking at UT. Again, I would focus on sports. You’re strength seems to lie in hockey so I would focus on that and kick a$$. </p>

<p>Our senior class had about 750 kids in it - and I’m pretty sure over one hundred applied to UT. The people that got in in my school who weren’t in the top 10% did a lot of work with sports and were REALLY good. Keep up your grades and don’t slack and do great in hockey! That’s my recommendation. Good luck!! :)</p>

<p>For UT Austin if you went to a truly hyper competitive school and it was IN THE AUSTIN AREA then you have a decent chance at getting in. The big one is Westlake High if you go there and are in the top 25% you have a very good chance. (I have multiple friends that are going there that were out of the top 8% but were from competitive schools in the Austin area). Other than that I have no idea about Cornell.</p>

<p>I live in Houston, but my school is very competitive, recently newsweek ranked it as top 6% in all American highschools. Also, I’m applying ED for Cornell.</p>

<p>What school do you go to, and what is your ethnicity? I also go to a very competitive public school in the Houston area, so I ask out of curiosity. And regarding ethnicity, being Hispanic (assuming that’s what you meant by minority) may not help too much if you’re in Texas, since UT is already about 22% Hispanic as it is.</p>
