Hi, I was wondering if i should try to re-take or just not bother at applying to Exeter, Phillips Academy, Groton, and Kent if I have a lower SSAT score on their standards.

I got a 1950 on my SSAT as an overall total.
I'm planning on re-taking them in January.

If you have good grades and are otherwise a good applicant then you should apply. You can just see from all the applicants on here getting into these schools with 99-95% and yet the schools average is only 80-90%, so there must be some lower scores weighing them down.

Kent has an average SSAT score of 70% so if you can get around there you’ll be fine. I know a kid at Kent with a 59% overall so I guess it’s not factored as much as it at other schools.

If you look at Boarding School Review and Wikipedia you can figure out what the average SSAT scores are for incoming students. If you want to be at boarding school next year make sure you have some schools in the list where your scores will be meaningfully above average. One thing to consider is throwing in a couple of Junior Boarding Schools so you can demonstrate success as a boarder and apply for 10th grade if you’re not accepted at a top school this year. Those schools include Fay and Bement which I believe are co-ed, also Cardigan Mountain School and Eaglebrook for boys. All these schools have strong placement at top boarding schools.

I’m guessing a 1950 is <70%, in which case I would highly recommend for you to retake it if you wanted to get into some of the more prestigious schools. Most kids I know that go to Exeter and such score at least 2200+. Granted there are some who are exceptional athletes and etc., but that’s just a very small minority.

On the November test a 1970 was in the 48th% so your score would be well below that. I would definitely recommend taking the January test to try to improve your score.

For Kent you’re in the average range so you have a pretty good shot there. I don’t know about Groton, Exeter and Andover though. They’re super competitive and their average SSAT scores are in the 90’s. However SSAT scores aren’t all that matters. If you have some sort of hook you might still get in, just don’t get your hopes up to high.

Sorry for not answering your question Darvard, I have not taken the SSAT yet, am just here to get everyones input on whether not I can get into Exeter. Besides Exeter I do plan on applying to other schools, but Exeter is my No. 1 choice. So I will concisely tell everyone my achievements and my extra curricular activities. I live in Panama (Central America, not Florida.)

I won the Presidents Education Award.
I am fluent in both Spanish and English.
I always get 3-4 As each quarter.
I practice Hap-Ki-Do
I play American Football, and was elected to play for the all start Panamanian team.
When football season ends I play soccer and tennis.
I scuba dive.
Im going to attend Exeters summer school program during the 2011 Summer.

Well, thats basically it I know that it might not be much for Exeter standards, and I am pretty sure that I will not be accepted to the school, but am going to give it my best and see what happens. Please give me any ideas, tips, anything that could help, and please don’t worry about sounding harsh I love constructive criticism.

it’s just that the kids getting in those top schools with low scores have something special like maybe they’re division 1 in hockey and play the goalie and a school needed that or they wrote an amazing essay that wowed all the AOs, ssats aren’t too important but for boarding schools it will raise flags if it’s below maybe a 50, 60 percentile or so depending on the school.

Thank you everyone very very much. Nervous times are approaching and I just want to get one last opinion from everyone. The things I’m most worried about are my extra curricular’s.

I’ve run for student senate for two years
I’ve been playing soccer for 6 years
I’ve been swimming for 9
I was very active on my schools track team last year and I plan to join again
I participated in the rally to restore sanity in October in DC
I participate in the anti suicide association
I enjoy crew and cycling outside school

I think my recommendations were pretty strong
I have A’s and B’s in school
I got in the 69% for SSAT’s
I think I did very well in my interviews, especially at Andover

I think I had the strongest essays for Exeter and Groton
