What are my chances to get into Barnard College?

Hi guys,

I’m applying to Barnard RD, and was wondering if any of you could estimate my chances of getting accepted to Barnard College. Please, take into consideration that I’m applying through the HEOP admissions which is for students who come from low income families, and have slightly lower stats.

ACT: 23 (average national score)

Extracurriculars:

  • Afterschool tutor (3 years and ongoing)
  • NHS Security (2 years and ongoing.Became security this year)
  • School Ambassador (4 years) -Peer Mentoring (1 year) -Library Volunteer (2 months) -School Library Volunteer (1 year) -School Council Committee (1 year) -College Course at local college (1 semester) -Paid academic tutor to 4 students, outside of school. (2 years)

GPA: 93.67% (weighted)

Demographics:

  • Income: <42K
  • First generation college bound student -Live in Queens, New York

Thank you for reading. Please wish me luck; getting accepted would be a dream!

Also, I’m going to major in Biology with a pre-med track.

Do you have back-up schools? Statistically, you have virtually no chance.

@TurnerT
First of all, thank you for replying. As I had mentioned, I am applying through the HEOP admissions. It’s a separate program that accepts students with ACT or SAT scores below or at their average stats. If you would like more information, here is the link: http://barnard.edu/heop. Of course, the program will take into consideration of my GPA, extracurriculars, essays, than just my ACT score. Now, if I applied without the HEOP admissions, then my chances would be low due to my ACT score. On the bright side, Barnard College focuses more on essays and extracurriculars than viewing an individual as a set of numbers. Therefore, I believe that my chances aren’t as low as you may think. In addition, my counselor, teachers, and students from top colleges believe that my essays are strong; I’ve received comments that my essays were unique and genuinely inspirational.

The problem is that your scores are not below avg for Barnard, they are significantly below avg for Barnard. Your gpa is strong, but there will be many applicants submitting with stronger gpas plus higher scores. What has the rigor if your classes been like?
By all means take a shot and apply, but be sure to have some more realistic schools on your list.

@wisteria100, thank you for your reply. The HEOP admissions does not accept students with a combined ACT score
over 24, so it’s strictly for students with an ACT or SAT equivalent score below 24. Therefore, I am applying with this into consideration. As for the rigor of my classes, I’ve taken as many APs that my school has offered, although, it doesn’t have more than 5 AP courses. I’ve taken Ap Biology, Ap Lit. and Comp., Ap Spanish, Ap Government, and Ap Calc. I’m always on the high honor roll, coming in 4th out of 115 students, and have won 9 school awards including ones that choose only me out of the 115 students. I also have strong letter of recommendations from my teachers (they’ve known me for about 3 years), and from my counselor because I always come in on a typical basis to ask questions about college, and other related topics. The teachers that wrote my letter of recommendations typically emphasize my academic ethics to other students: one cried when giving me an excellence award because she claimed to have never seen any students as dedicated and passionate as I was, and the other wants me to stay in contact with her after graduation because she feels that I will be a successful person. Yes, there are many others with better stats; I cannot deny that. Also, yes, I do have safety schools on my list. I’ve applied to many CUNYs, and other private schools that are a mix of safeties and reaches.
