What are my chances? Where can I go? or am I just an Asian failure now? haha

Would it be imperative to get good grades to prove myself this last year?
SAT SCORES:
CR: 540 , 550
M: 660 , 660
W: 640 , 690
T: 1840, 1900

Would it help if I could raise that CR score? I feel like I actually could, quite possibly. Or take the ACT? I feel like I can do so much better than this 1900.. I have no ECs, but a few clubs. I have been nominated to leadership positions before that's pretty much it. 9th grade INT tennis. :(

Is there prettymuch no chance for getting into like schools like NYU or USC or BU / BC anymore? especially with that C in USH. What if I got a significantly higher score on the ACT instead?

Also it feels like my new school kind of disqualifies my freshman year grades :( I have been to many schools, and I have to say this one is the hardest of all the others. They have a standard to keep as a very top school and they dont feel like they like giving A's at all :

THXX FOR INPUT

No AP courses available?

only one AP class was available in 11th grade AP USH, but then I didn’t take that, because I am very weak in history, as you can see. I am taking 2 APs only this year and 1 honor :

B- in asian studies… but aren’t you asian? :P

anyway, you definitely are lacking in terms of gpa, and the schools you’re looking at will view you as numbers ONLY since you have no notable ECs… gl with USC with 0 aid if you get in by some odd chance, and if you want to be in contention for decent schools, you’ll probably need a 32+ on the ACT.

NYU and USC look very unlikely, sorry. You might have a shot at Boston University, as your SAT is a bit above their average. But they require SAT Subject Tests (most of the time), and you can’t call them a safety yet.

uh ya probably going to so mediocre college now hm? :\ but ya that class was kinda hard for me. even if i’m asian :stuck_out_tongue:

ouch 32 is pretty high so pretty much any chance is gone unless i hit it with the ACT right

i will definitely need aid. :frowning: i am attending private school right now through a near full scholarship/aid thing

can some people match me up with some pretty decent schools that i could possibly go to then? sigh i’ll also be the first one in my family to attend college so i really feel like i failedd this time

go to a community college, get straight As, then go to a big boy school.

no joke, that’s a good plan if you’re in california, research the TAG system

no because i would hate myself. hawaii colleges are crap if you havent known: all of them. University of Hawaii which my sister is going to she says she’s completely misterable there too. that’s like the best one here. I’d have to go out and if i do i’d be spending money anyway. i’d hate myself for going to cc even though it’s a viable option. i think im sticking to a reg four year university

Community college actually would be the best course of action with your stats. If you can’t even get A’s in regular high school classes, how will you fare in college? Course rigor and GPA are very important to any school, and you are mediocre in both departments. You can try your luck at a much less prestigious school, but I think it would be better in the long run to get good grades at a community college, then transfer to a prestigious four-year university. You’ll start off paying less, and end off with so much more.

that’s harsh. i could easily get straight A’s in regular courses at my old private school, then i switched over. as an asian that’s almost like seppuku. you do understand if i tell my dad i want to go to community college first, he’d literally kill me? thank you.

it is very difficult to transfer over unless you do very well. my sister who goes to the university here cannot transfer if her life depended on it. credits couldn’t even been considered. THINK HAWAII -_-

You don’t want to go to community college. We all know you don’t want to. Nobody wants to. But sit down with your dad and tell him that at this point you almost need to.

Would you rather pay more to go to a barely recognizable university, and graduate with a degree that wouldn’t make employers bat an eyelash? Or would you save money at a community college, impress a prestigious university enough to accept you (and possibly give financial aid), graduate, and wow employers with your shiny degree?

what makes you think i can’t go to a “barely recognizable university” and then transfer to a better one? … just because your degree isn’t from a prod univ doesn’t mean they wont bat an eye. im done with this tread as well as cc because quite clearly people are too harsh, over-perfectionist and have absolutely no idea what life is like in hawaii.

What’s the difference between going to a university for two years and transferring to a more prestigious one and the method I described above? You’d basically be using it like a community college, except it’d be more expensive.

That being said, I still think you should apply to some schools such as Boston University just to see if you could get in. If you’re really dead set on going to a 4-year, pick some safety schools as well. But don’t feel like you were cheated out of a good education if you get rejected from them. You as a college-bound student have a responsibility to make sure that you were and still are challenging yourself with tough courses and maintaining good grades.

that’s what im doing. im trying to hit the year off the best i could. money wont be too much of an issue because their aid will be nice im going to assume especially for the ones my college councilor picked out. they almost meet all need. my parents can pay off the rest as they said. i dont mind being rejected a few times. you miss all the shots you dont take. okay well ima just just see what happens, happens. im gunna take the ACT to try once if it’s better than the SAT for me and call it quits

3.5 UW 1900 SAT might get you into some good schools like calpoly, even a UC straight from high school (albeit the lower tier ones). Figure out your interest and search for some colleges in your range. There are many good universities that aren’t as popular / heard of and so receive less applicants with less impressive states, despite that it’s a good school.

P.S. I know you’re emphasizing that your old school was easier, and that this new school is rigorous. But very few colleges within the 3.5 UW, 1900 SAT range care about school rigor. It’s usually the higher tier ones that do. Sad reality, but if you explain it in your application, I’m sure they will bring attention to it.

Ignore the nonsense about community colleges. They are clearly the best option for a lot of people, but with your stats, you can get into many very, very good four-year colleges and have the chance to do very well.

The person advising you is a high school senior, just like yourself, and knows nothing more about the college admission process than you do.

I won’t “chance” you for your desired schools, because I don’t believe in chancing (the only people who can tell you what your chances are for any college are the members of the admissions committee at that college, and then only when they have your complete application packet in front of them). But I will say that if you go to a high school that is recognized as being very rigorous and with grade deflation, most colleges will take that into account when they review your qualifications.

I would recommend going to your GC or, even better, checking out your school’s admission profile on Naviance, if your school subscribes to that.

I think you could get into BU (maybe)

But my friend’s son, last year, got rejected at USC and Boston College with a 740 on his math sat.

I would apply to schools in the midwest and the south, where the competition may be a bit less than in the northeast and the west coast. Everyone wants to go to NYU, BC, BU, and USC. There are plenty of other good schools out there, that are 90% as good.

Nguyen youre acting pretty arrogant for someone who doesnt know what the **** theyre talking about…

OP…community college is not your only choice…there are people with much worse stats that wont settle for CC

I love how people on this site are always so ready and willing to sit on their throne of judgement and pass down the sage advice “maybe you should go to community college then transfer”

Def apply to BC and NYU even though you prob will get no aid from NYU…U of hawaii at minoa is also a good option…we had someone from my school go there last year for archaelogy
