I scored a 34 on my ACT, but I have a GPA of 3.7 and a weighted GPA of 3.9. With these stats, do you think I have a chance of getting accepted into Rice? I feel confident with my ACT score but my GPA isn't as strong. Will my GPA bring me down, or can I make up for it with my test score?

Where do you stand within your HS class? (Most Rice students are in the top 5%) Where are you from? (Rice applicants from Texas are a dime a dozen and can have a much tougher time in admissions than those from farther away.) Have you taken the most rigorous courses offered at your school? Have you done better in your Junior year than in prior years? (Those things can help your application.)

While they are helpful to an application, strong test scores don’t “make up for” a weaker GPA. On the other hand, students with extraordinary out of class commitments or accomplishments (academic, athletic, etc.) are sometimes admitted to Rice even with somewhat lower GPAs.
