Essay:

As I stood waiting to deliver my speech, my shoes were tied and my hair combed, I felt time stop; I saw myself as a successful young man able to make a huge impact within my community. My appearance was as neatly groomed as the ideas I had formulated. With confidence and enthusiasm, I could hear the silence of the stadium, feel the gaze from the audience, and see the reaction of the people who knew me and the ones who did not; they were ready to find out what I was capable of achieving.
Reflecting on the obstacles of my life, I remembered the difficulties presented through the years: being challenged by a difficult school, a new country, a new language, a new environment, and a new perspective. At first I did not have any avocations; I didn’t feel productive, and my ideas were not settled into specific goals; I needed to make a change in my life.
Yes, Science Academy, a magnet high school that I attended, was difficult; but as freshmen we had mentors who helped us through our first school year and advised us what to do in difficult academic situations. When school started, my grades were low. I looked for any opportunity to improve my grades and to be as successful as I could in extracurricular activities. I asked for help from my mentor, Judith. Having Judith as my mentor was fortuitous; she introduced me to National Hispanic Institute (NHI), which ignited the flame in my life. NHI is a debate and leadership program, but for me it eventually became much more than that. It was the perfect opportunity for me to become part of a great cause, learn important facts about my community, and express my ideas on the issues of the real world. I learned that life is not only about me. It is about how the things I do can impact society positively.
There I was at NHI after three months of intense preparation, working to improve my English, and being challenged at school by demanding subjects. Nothing could stop me from adapting, improvising, and overcoming. Now I was ready to display, through my NHI speech, the knowledge and experience I had gained. The prompt consisted of developing a code for the 21st century about Latino families that addresses this issue of the lack of communication within Latino families and should outline this ideal balancing act, binding them to it, to maintain their status as a contributing member of society. Most of my opponents would need to spend hours thinking about what to write, creating long speeches, and memorizing them word-for-word. I had an entirely different point of view than my opponents as a member of a Latino family living in a modern global society. I understood the needs of my community, and I knew exactly how to respond.
My heart could express such things with a facility that no other person could. Language was not an obstacle and neither were the people in the stadium; it was about what I believed and my strong thoughts that led me to victory in the debate. NHI not only helped me to improve my communication skills, but it changed my point of view as well, leading me to become more involved in my community. I recruited freshmen around the Valley for NHI and became an active member of my school. I got involved as a student ambassador, a kick-off mentor, and a public relations spokesman for school clubs and several local businesses. Everything in my life had direction, and I was working with passion and dedication.
So there I was, a young man, at the front of the stage about to compete, to debate about what my community was capable of doing for family, academics, businesses, government, and the world. I was proud and focused because I knew I would make a significant impact on society.

The GPA is unweighted, I’m not sure what is the gpa total with the weight added, I have taken many ap classes. As well I have 5 on AP Language Spanish and 4 Spanish Literature. It’s been a difficult but there has been improvement from 9th grade to my senior year.

I have finished everything already. I submitted the applications few weeks ago, I just wanted to get some expectations results, but thank you. :)

Hi Cesaralberto,

Thank you for your interest in Wheelock! I hope that you enjoyed being on our campus for the College World Series last summer.

Your strong record of community service and leadership makes you a great candidate for Wheelock, so your chances look pretty good from my prospective (although this is not an official file review, just an opinion)!
