What are my chances?

I am a senior coming from a competitive school in Northern Virginia. I have about a 4.071 GPA (my school only does weighted) and an SAT score of 1940. I know by SAT isn’t stellar, but I have a lot of leadership roles, internships, and extracurriculars I have written about in my application.

Some include: 1. Internship working with a local photojournalist: worked on projects for Teen Vogue and H&M
2. Job with an up and coming music production company as a creative director.
3. Internship with a local newspaper, leading me into my current job: Paid freelance writer and photographer.
4. I also founded my own company/have my own website for my photography.
5. I started a project at my school like “Humans of New York”, interviewing students at my school so they can share their unique stories. Over 1,020 likes.

Other academic credentials:

  1. Won a Spanish scholarship freshman year
  2. Member of three honors societies
  3. Varsity Scholar Athlete for 3 Years

I will graduate having taken 8 AP classes and an AP Scholar with Honor.

More extracurriculars:

  1. Section leader (bass player) of school’s highest orchestra (for three years), member of the orchestra since Freshman year (participated in a district orchestra as well). I’ve also participated in our German Exchange program all four years, traveling to Germany twice with my orchestra to perform.
  2. Varsity track athlete Freshman to Junior Year (two time regional qualifier)
  3. I’ve played soccer from age 5 to age 17, hoping to start again in spring. I was team captain of a travel soccer team for the last couple of years.
  4. Founded photography club at school (and president)
  5. Raised over $15,000 with a few of my friends for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
  6. Vice President of my orchestra in 2014, Social Chair for the past 2 years
  7. Head of decorations for my school’s homecoming this year through leadership class
  8. Student mentor of underclassmen last year (competitive to get)
  9. Social Media manager of a nonprofit organization that has now expanded to a national level (organization started by a classmate over the past year)

I know U Texas at Austin is very difficult to get into out of state. I was wondering A) what are my chances and B) don’t students start getting accepted or rejected between February and March?

I believe you have the wrong forum. This isn’t the U Texas at Austin forum.

Yep, sorry, I’ve been copy pasting my credentials from forum to forum. I am incredibly interested in NYU and I am definitely trying to get some insight as to my chances of getting in for the Fall of 2016.

What school/program did you apply to? Your SAT score is shaky.

Yeah I know…the math section killed me. I am interested in majoring in either English or Film/Media Studies and potentially minoring in marketing.

I think you’re looking at NYU being a high-match/mid-reach. I assume you applied to CAS? What was your second choice of school? And how were your essays?

Okay. Yes I did apply to CAS and writing is my strongest skill, so I think my essays were pretty good—my NYU essay was definitely my most passionate. And I honestly don’t have a singular second choice, but I’m also looking at schools like U Texas Austin, William and Mary, just got into U Maryland scholars program and some Midwest schools…applied to 13 all together.

ugh. Sorry this is my first day on this website so I am having difficulty separating my feeds from one another. At NYU I would major in communications/journalism (just to clarify).

No, I meant your second school of choice within NYU. What did you write about in your NYU essay?

Ah, sorry I misunderstood. I believe I picked the School of Professional Studies. In my essay, I wrote about how I strive to be a global citizen, emphasizing on how I’ve learned from my diverse classmates; since I created a project at my school modeled after Humans of New York, I emphasized how I used my journalist skills (love of writing and photography) to capture diversity in my school. I also discussed how I began my journey as a global citizen through participating in an international exchange with my orchestra for 4 years. I then went on to talking about how A) NYU’s emphasis on learning in an creative and diverse environment matched with my interests perfectly, B) NYU is the only school that allows me to be in the epicenter of all of the major media outlets I dream of working for C) I discussed how NYU’s philosophy as a school blended with that of New York City’s, and how both learning in NYU and the city would benefit my intellectual development. I added some creative intros and conclusions as well.
