College Essays:

  • UC’s : 1. Talked about my talent in music. I learned piano when I was young and know how to play songs by ear. Had to stop taking lessons, but I still practiced and learned how to play other instruments like ukulele, trumpet, and guitar. I also learned how to compose songs and talked about how I wrote one for my grandma battling breast cancer.
  1. Talked about how I express my creativity by tailoring and altering 50 cent clothes from the swapmeet because I cannot afford new clothes.
  2. Talked about my 6 year dedication in AVID. AVID is a college prep program. I explained how I “took advantage” of the free college trips and tutoring because I can’t afford it on my own. I talked about how my communication and collaboration skills improved.
  3. Explained why my grades were low because of the inconveniences in my life. My father left us when I was young, leaving my unemployed mother to take care of my family with no viable source of income. My brother developed depression and my grandmother was battling cancer. Because of these things occurring, I didn’t want to tell anyone I was struggling and continued to try to balance my academics, ec’s, and time to take care of my family. I had a lot of pressure because I am an eldest sibling and am expected to be a model child. After a meeting with my counselor at the end of my junior year abt my declining grades, I decided to do what I had feared to do and spoke up. Because of this, everything in my life drastically improved.
  • Privates: Mainly talked about my desire to change the Asian community's immediate reaction to casualties of mental illness, that they are weak and should just toughen up. This is because of how badly my family treated my brother during his battle with depression.

I know my chances aren’t very high and there’s really no point in asking when decisions are starting to roll in, but I was just curious and wanted to get an idea of where I’m at. I’m just regretful of my academic performance because I know I could have done much better. Thank you.

CPP, CSUF and UCR have all posted decisons although not are all out. I assume you have not heard from any these schools yet?

CPP and CSUF admit by major and eligbility index which is 3856. You might get into CPP and CSUF but you selected a popular and competitive major (Psych) for these schools. If you have not heard yet, your chances may be slim.

UCR is rolling admissions and it is possible, but UC GPA is below average but SAT within range. Your EC’s and essays may boost your chances.

I think the rest of the UC’s are going to be very tough. All the UC’s are very GPA focused and unfortunately they do not consider Senior grades in their admission decisions. Did you receive any supplemental reviews from the UC campuses?

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.00-3.39 (capped weighted) and not major specific:

UCB: 1.1%
UCLA: 0.9%
UCSD: 0.9%
UCSB: 1.4%
UCI: 3.1%
UCD: 4.1%
UCSC: 14.3%
UCR: 22.9%
UCM: 56.7%

25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCB: 1280-1490

UCLA: 1280-1500
UCSD: 1250-1470
UCSB: 1210- 1450
UCD: 1190-1430
UCI: 1190-1420
UCSC: 1170-1380
UCR: 1090-1310
UCM: 1020-1230

I cannot comment on USF or Pepperdine but since they are private, they will consider Mid-year Senior grades to your benefit.

Do you have a safety/backup school, just in case? Best of luck and hope you have some options to consider.

So far I got accepted to La Verne and waitlisted for Chapman. I have only heard from CSUF because they had asked for my Mid-year grades. I have read about appeals, is it worth it to attempt at one? Also is Creative Writing a selective major? I would just feel really content with UCR because it’s one of the closer campuses to me and would be more affordable than attending a private. Thank you.

Appealing a decision would mean that you have new and compelling information that was not available at the time of application. For some schools, getting good grades Senior year may help but not for all since you are expected to do well and pass all Senior year classes or face being rescinded.

Since CSUF did ask for Mid-year grades that will be a plus.

UCR admits into the University and then into the major. Creative Writing is not considered a selective major but the UC’s are considered selective schools. UCR is definitely possible.

At this point, you should have all your decisions within the next 2 weeks and then you can see where you stand. Best of luck and keep us updated.

Also do you think it was a mistake to put that I was failing most of my second semester classes during 11th grade but managed to bring it up besides PreCal in the additional comments? I don’t know why I thought that was rational to say, but I also explained it a bit in one of my essays? Thank you.
