What are my chances?

Weighted GPA: 3.59844
Unweighted GPA: 3.05
Class Rank: 65 out of 330 (top 20%)
SAT: 1990/2400 (1350/1600) [Math: 690, C.R.: 660, Writing: 640]

(weighting is done by giving honors and AP courses an extra point [A = 5, A- = 4.67, etc.] )

Freshman Year:
English I Honors, Geometry Honors, World History, Biology Honors, Spanish II Honors, Intro to Computer Programming, Gym/Health

Sophomore Year:
English II Honors, Algebra II Honors, US History AP, Spanish III, Chemistry Honors, Gym/Drivers Ed, Computer Graphics, Cad Tech (Mechanical)

Junior Year:
English III Honors, Precalculus Honors, US History II, Spanish IV, Physics Honors, Cad Tech (Architecture), Gym/Health

Senior Year:
Calculus, Accounting Honors, Cad Tech (Mechanical II), Physics AP, Anatomy and Physiology Honors, English IV, Gym/Health

I am currently a junior at a New Jersey high school. I can probably pull straight A’s in all my classes’ senior year except Physics AP and Anatomy and Physiology Honors. I have taken a range of courses throughout my high school career and have some extracurricular activities. I am part of Darfur Action Committee, ERASE (Ending Racism and Sexism Everywhere), TSA (Technology Student Association), NHS (National Honors Society). I also have for 150 volunteer hours at my local hospital and some hours for my local library. I did track freshman year but had to stop due to health issues. I am also an active member in my religious school, which I attend for 4 hours a week.

Possible Colleges:
Rutgers, TCNJ, NJIT, Stevens, Pennsylvania State, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western.

I was surprised at how low my unweighted GPA. This is just a list of some schools that I was thinking about applying to before I realized how low my GPA actually was. I was hoping for some insight on where else I should consider applying and how my possibilities are at the schools I listed.

Thanks for your help.

**This was previously posted in the wrong forum so I am reposting it in the correct section. Sorry for an inconvenience this may have caused.

Rutgers--Match
TCNJ--Match to Slight Reach
NJIT--Match
Stevens--Slight Reach
Pennsylvania State--Reach
Cornell--Gigantic Reach
Carnegie Mellon--Reach
Case Western--Reach

Your good SAT scores help you at the first four on this list--but not at the last four, where your GPA is just too low (UW) for the SATs to matter.

Consider St. John's, Indiana University, Oregon, Temple, Drexel, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Bentley (for business), Purdue, and possibly Fordham.

I am also retaking the SATs in June and can get around a 2100-2200.
I
want to do biomedical engineering with premed. With any luck, I can get my GPA (UW) up to a 3.36 before I graduate. More on colleges, I want to stay in-state or somewhat close to home. I will probably apply to schools around the tri-state area, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, and maybe some down south.

Is Virginia Tech a reach for me?

Thanks for the help.

Virginia Tech's averages:
3.38 uw GPA, 3.67 weighted
1198/1600 average SAT I score

With your projected major (pre-med) and likely final GPA (3.36 uw), I'd also look closely at the University of Pittsburgh and Ohio State University.

If you get higher SAT scores (2100-2200), you could possibly also get into George Washington University or Boston University, but you should be able to get into Pittsburgh and maybe get into Ohio State with the higher GPA (3.36 uw) and existing (1990) SAT.

The problem (of course) is that you will be judged on your GPA when you apply. So if you apply in the Fall, you will be judged on the existing GPA (3.06 unweighted). The higher GPA only comes into account if you wait until after you graduate next June.

Best of success.

Thanks for the help. I would also appreciate it if other people can respond.

BTW...Calcruzer, where do you get your info from? I have been looking at collegeboard.com but I was wondering what other sites/books there are that can give a variety of information.

VT is a good target for you. My sister got in last year with 3.4..something UW GPA, a 1060 SAT, good extracurricular, an average classes and she was OOS. I was a reach for her, though.

Princeton Review is good for information, either the books or online.

Of the schools you listed, only NJIT and Steven would be matches. I would consider Temple and Drexel.

I get my data from Princeton Review. Sometimes the data is off by a few points because I'm using data from 2005 in most cases (it's what Princeton Review puts out). But the averages at most schools don't change that much from year to year--the notable exception being at the University of California campuses. For them I use their actual factbook on the website for this reason.

cornell and carnegie are big reaches.
i dont know much about case western but its probably a reach
I could see you getting into the others..
