Recommendations should be very good and essays will be either good or very good.

Thanks for your help.

It looks good to me - but I'm just a parent with a Rice kid. Good luck!

Did your son or daughter have similar test scores and extracurriculars? I'm asking to see what kind of people get into Rice. Thanks for your comments anxiousmom.

Without being too specific (because I don't feel like writing a long post now), I think you have a really good chance of getting in. I'm at Rice as a freshman now, and I had similar stats, although I'm from AL. As long as your essay is good, and I'm assuming it will be, you'll certainly do well.

jtullis, here are your stats if I'm not mistaken:

1460 SAT; 34 ACT
Rank 4/130
99.6 GPA
5s on all AP tests taken except one 4.
Lots of schoolwide awards for academic achievement/highest class grades.
Several statewide/national writing awards
National Merit Scholar
President/Vice-Pres. of a few clubs; member of several more

Your stats look better than mine in my opinion, especially your statewide/national writing awards. Nonetheless, thanks for your optimism. How do you like Rice so far?

I've really enjoyed my first few months here. Despite hearing about the diversity of people and their interests before coming, I was still surprised by the vastly different types of people I've met here. Another surprise was the party scene, which is bigger than I expected, though not out of control. I do like it though, and it's never hard to find others who aren't into drinking and other stuff, if that's your style. Class size is great for the most part; same with profs. My only real complaint has been the weather, which apparently is unseasonably warm. Hopefully that will change within a few weeks and we'll actually get to experience typical fall temperatures.

Anyway, enough for now. Like I said, though, I really do think you have a good shot at getting in. Make sure to express interest through visiting, if possible. Also, in my opinion (though you may have already decided), ID is the way to go, because it accomplishes the task of showing your interest in Rice without the early deadline of ED.

Let me know if you need anything else, whether it be information or otherwise. I'd be glad to help. Good luck.

Thanks for your help jtullis.
I'm applying Interim Decision and plan on visiting, interviewing and attending a few classes at the very least. BTW, do you know if spending a night at the dorms really gives a good picture of what Rice's social scene is like?

I would say that it definitely does if you make it a Friday or Saturday night. Otherwise, nights are mostly quiet or have only limited parties that you'd really have to search for. A lot of the prospies I've met (and the one I've had so far) have gone to and enjoyed the parties, if that means anything to you.

And if you want, I can give you my information and you can request to stay with me. I'm in a double right now but they're pretty big and we have plenty of room. Just let me know what your plans are and if you're interested.
