Hey guys,

I was just wondering what my chances would be of getting into Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I’m an entering Senior this year.

Here what i have so far:

GPA: 3.1 w (i know its not so great, but only one aspect)
SAT: 1860; 700 Math, 590 Writing, 570 Reading
ACT: 28
by the way, i will be retaking both of those very soon

Next Year I’ll be taking
AP Comp Sci
AP Stats

I’ve already taken (didn’t do so well though)
AP World History - 1
AP United States History - 2
AP Physics B - 3

Varsity Tennis for 2 Years
Track and Field for 2 Years
Cross Country for 1 year

In about 3 clubs. I’m also planning on creating one this coming year.

Ethnicity: African American

So what do you think?

Be sure to look at The Profile

From what I can see, you have good ACT/SAT scores, but nobody can say for sure how well you will fare in admissions. To be honest, depending on the major you choose, your gpa may be more or less a point of worry. Hit those SATs hard and I'm sure you can make up for the loss in grade point avg.

Cal poly does not put much consideration into ECs. In fact, you won't even be able to list them; their admissions system provides a drop-down menu for average hrs/wk spent on any & all ECs. There is no essay/rec letter, either. I don't recall ethnicity falling in as an admissions factor. Of course, CP's admission system is all computerized.

All said, I think you have a chance, though not a certain one. Goodluck

I got in last year as a physics major. I too had an ACT score of 28 but my GPA was 3.7 unweighted. I got a 3 on the AP physics B but that will pretty much do nothing for you. Even as a physics major it didn't offer any significant help. Cal Poly only accepts the AP Physics C because it is calculus based, not algebra based. However i was well prepared for Physics 141.

thanks! yes, i plan to bring those scores up to make up for my deficit. Also, how is Cal Poly SLO? (campus, etc.)

well im not a student but i visited the area b4 to check out the college. the campus is small but its nice, they have new dorms, the town is a nice beachy area, lots of recreation(mountain biking, fishing, beach is nearby, windy wen i went there), small population, close to costco and electronic stores, next to prison haha(my aunt worked there) but its a low level prison. these were things i picked up wen i went(over spring break) hope it helps a little
