What are my chances?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what my chances would be of getting into Penn State. I'm an entering Senior this year.

Here what i have so far:

GPA: 3.1 w (i know its not so great, but only one aspect)
SAT: 1860; 700 Math, 590 Writing, 570 Reading
ACT: 28
by the way, i will be retaking both of those very soon

Next Year I'll be taking
AP Comp Sci
AP Stats

I've already taken (didn't do so well though)
AP World History - 1
AP United States History - 2
AP Physics B - 3

Varsity Tennis for 2 Years
Track and Field for 2 Years
Cross Country for 1 year

In about 3 clubs. I'm also planning on creating one this coming year.

Ethnicity: African American

So what do you think?

You need a GPA of at least 3.5+

You might have a chance at a branch campus...University Park? Not so much... Well, maybe if you raise the GPA significantly (it counts for 2/3 of the admissions decision) and raise those ACT/SAT scores, too. Good luck!

Yeah, you need at least a 3.5 to have a shot. I still think you should give it a try, but make sure you apply to other places as well. Anyway, best of luck.

You could have a shot with less than 3.5, I'd say 3.2 and you'd still have a "shot".

3.1 is going to hurt. I would say 3.5 too or maybe 3.4.

Thanks to All of you. I really appreciate the input.

I really plan on bringing up the GPA this year. I'm not sure but, would it help if i sent 1st semester grades of 12th grade??

Probably not - they are pretty formula-driven, and your first semester's grades are unlikely to bring up that 3.1 to the necessary range. You could always go to a satellite for 2 yrs and then take the transfer to main as a backup plan. When you apply they'll ask if you'll accept a satellite, and which ones.
