Hi,

I go to an elite school in Maryland, whose students generally go on to great schools. I was wondering if someone can give me some insight as to how realistic admission to NW is--in my particular case.

I'm a rising junior.

I had a cumulative 3.28 in 9th grade and a 3.52 in 10th grade--an upward trajectory.
I hope to have at least a 3.7-4.0 this upcoming year. This year I'll be taking AP English, AP US History, and AP Music

I am African-American and own one of the most lucrative minor-owned business in the state. I am also on the board of Kids Helping Needy Kids, Inc., a charitable organization to which I give much of my time and energy. I am a 3-year U.S. Congressional intern. (I started summer before my freshman year--without any special connections)I am also actively involved in the SGA--I am VP of the student body.

So, with my extra curricular activites, estimated 3.5 cumulative, and a hopefully high SAT score, will I get in to an Ivy League school? Perhaps I'll even to early decision!

Thanks so much!

I’m sorry, Northwestern isn’t Ivy league! My bad! :)

That’s news to me! I enrolled thinking it was an ivy!

;p

That had to be sarcastic lol

A 3.5 GPA would be underwhelming at NU, Ivies, or similarly competitive schools.
Saying that you hope that SATs will be high isn’t meaningful. Let’s assess that after you have scores.
Your ECs and URM status are the big selling points for you.
Does your school give class ranking, or even decile ranking?
But honestly, it’s rather premature to be assessing “chances,” which can be done much more meaningfully next spring, when you’ve got some scores back and see how your junior year grades are actually shaping up.
Good luck!

i also go to an “elite” maryland private school and like you, i also want to go to northwestern, although i am a junior. obviously it’s impossible to make a good guess without junior year grades, seeing a full high school transcript, your essay, test scores etc. however, a 3.5 gpa (unwieghted i assume) would definitely NOT disqualify you from getting especially if you have an upward trajectory and got stragiht A’s junior year taking a hard schedule. my school sends a few kids to northwestern every year and their average gpa is about 3.6-3.7, while taking a rigorous schedule. plus your extracurriculars sound amazing and being a minority will help. and doing well on the SAT can make up for a weaker gpa.
