What are my odds? - Case Western Reserve University

Hi!!! I am wondering if someone can help me determine whether or not I should apply to Case Western Reserve University.

I have a lengthy list of extracurriculurs as well as excellent letters of recommendation from 2 teachers & my counselor. I have a 3.61 GPA unweighted, 3.88 weighted. 30 ACT superscore and 11 on ACT writing (out of 12). Will graduate haven with 4 AP credits and several honors credits. From the northern suburbs of Illinois, somewhat white-collar neighborhood.

I am extremely interested in business, should I apply to Case Western without business and transfer, or to business directly?

Frankly, you don’t know unless you try. Ask yourself if you will ever regret not applying and go from there! That said, I think your score/gpa are marginal for acceptance at Case.

YOu could look at this graph to see how you fit in https://www.thoughtco.com/case-western-reserve-gpa-sat-and-act-data-786405

@sssssb I’m afraid your chances are slim to none. Case is playing games with their acceptance numbers last year that resulted in a large wait list followed by accepting nobody from the list for this year. They offered a few hundred automatic acceptance for 2019-2020 so that will make competition even worse. My son was waitlisted:
7 AP credits, 32 ACT, 1400 SAT, 4.0 unweighted, 4.4 weighted, all-county musician, three varsity sports for all of HS, a part-time job, and community service. He was originally told by the director of admissions after his interview that he had a “better than 50% chance.” After they messed up their numbers, that changed pretty quickly. However, you will find another school that is a better match - you don’t need Case to be successful. My son chose a flagship state university and its honors college. Couldn’t be happier, won a scholarship that covers 75% of all costs for all four years, and has made lots of friends with some amazing kids.Keep looking and you’ll find the right school and not miss Case one bit.

I am not sure if it is slim to none…I am not sure what average Business student ACT score is. But I do agree that you should both apply and also look for other schools as well.

@choguy1 Could you explain more about what happened last year? What kinds of games were played? Also, do you know how many have accepted automatic acceptance for 2019?

Based on reading the waitlist thread from last year, most people chose not to take a gap year for an acceptance in 2019. You can boost your chances by showing interest in the school or if a family member attends.

It wasn’t games…
Case has in the last few years had a waiting list. They do that because they want to guarantee housing so they accept a certain amount, and as those students enroll or not, they fill in the rest with students from the waitlist so they can both fill the housing but not overfill.

So in the past they may have taken 100s of people off the waitlist, e.g.
In 17-18: 586
In 16-17: 333
In 15-16 518
In 14-15: 792

CWRU was known for taking many people off the waitlist. So you would think if you didn’t get accepted right away, that is okay, you had a good chance with the WL. And you would get offered the same merit scholarships as anyone who was accepted immediately.

But in 2018-2019 they had more enrollments than expected…a much better yield…and took 0 off the waitlist. Case admissions felt bad…they had been working with many students…so they decided to offer those that were the most highly qualified and highly interested a gap year…with guaranteed admittance for the next fall. They have since changed that to the spring if the student wants it. I don’t know how many students they offered this to nor how many accepted it.

@bopper Thanks for that explanation.

@sssssb I think you should apply. And there is one application, you so not have to transfer from Arts and Science to business or visa versa, either you get into Case as a whole and can study anything or you do not get in. You may get waitlisted but as Bopper explained, you can get in off the waitlist, given how many students turn down Case Western.

I know quite a few students with your stats at Case who studied marketing, nursing and finance.
You can change your major from economics to business or accounting up through sophomore year,
if you are uncertain.
.
Accounting is very very good at Case Western and will lead to a great job.

Case has so many kids who want to study CS and BME that they are overjoyed to find a student like you.
Be sure to ask one question of your admissions counselor to show interest.

The business college at Case is undersubscribed and great !

People are very confused about Case admissions. The stats for CS need to be much much higher than for marketing. And thus a lot of lower stat kids do get into Case every single year. Looking at averages tells you nothing, as there
are so few of these kids who actually want to study business, going to Case. The averages are very misleading. The stats for the nursing college are also much lower. Nursing is the smallest college between the four, so those lower test scores of some nursing students are not detectable.

A large number of very high scoring students turn down Case western every year for reasons of cost,
or location or other reasons. . There is room for average students.
About good 30% of applicants do get admitted. Its not that hard, but if a student wants a popular major, that may impact their chances to get admitted. However you can change majors for two full years at Case without any issues or transfer process, just an email, and your major can be changed. You would have to keep up with requirements for both majors, but everyone takes three SAGES seminars and other basic requirements, so its not that hard to transfer between Arts and Sciences and Business at Case.
