What are some good math/physics schools?

Hi, I'm a senior wanting to major in either math or physics. Can you please list me some schools that have awesome math or physics departments?

Stats:

GPA - 97%/100% UW
Rank - 1~3 out of 350
SAT - 2290
Awards - lots of math awards (regional & national)
- state math champion
- AIME qualifier & MIT math competition invited
- some random ART award .. haha
- school academic awards
AP - Calculus BC, Physics C Mech , Physics C E&M , Chemistry all 5s

awesome ECs (pretty well-rounded)

My dream schools are Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford, but for some reason (well obviously) they all seem to be super-reach schools. And I don't want to waste my Early chances.

Do you think it will still be worth a shot to apply to one of those schools as EA?

If not, could you PLEASE suggest me some nice math/physics schools?

Rice
UChicago

Your in-state flagship as a potential safety. Most flagship Us have good math and physics programs.

Yale
MIT
Columbia
Penn
Duke
U of Illinois
U of Michigan
UCLA

I would recommend the above schools in addition to the ones listed.

You’re as well-qualified as any to get into those schools. Others to consider on the smaller side are Caltech, Harvey Mudd as reaches (too many qualified applicants) and Case Western and Rose Hulman and St. Olaf.

Cost constraints? State of residency?

Minnesota and Stony Brook are worth a look as potential safeties, as their out of state cost is relatively low, while they have good reputations in your potential major subjects. Of course, you can also look at your in-state public universities for potential safeties (some of them are very good at math and/or physics).

Thanks for your replies!

I’m not a US citizen so I’m currently not considering any in-states, and cost is not really a crucial factor to me yet.

In terms of cost, can you and your parents pay full list price anywhere?

If you are an actual international student (as opposed to a non-citizen resident of the US), then financial aid and scholarships may be much more difficult to get at US universities.

Yes luckily my parents will pay full tuition anywhere. I don’t expect any FA or scholarships anyway.

And yes, I am an international student.

U of M has very good math and science programs

I think there are a lot of schools that would have good math and physics departments. If you look at the top 100 schools in US News rankings, either for universities or LAC’s I bet the majority have either good or excellent math and physics. Have you looked at a source such as the Fiske Guide to Colleges or Rugg’s Recommendations that have recommended schools for each major? They might be a good starting point for your research.
Carnegie Mellon? Johns Hopkins? Northwestern? Georgia Tech, Lehigh…
