What are some good options for me to stay at MIT?

I was admitted EA and am most likely going to be going to MIT. I was wondering what places (frats/houses) would be good for me; let me kind of let me tell you who I am.

Major: 6/18 (EECS/Math)

Academic Ability: Probably toward the upper end of the MIT spectrum, given my strong and advanced backgrounds through college courses and from what I've gathered through experience with other MIT students.

Me: I'm a 6'3 Indian, not fat, but not skinny, just kind of middleish. Generally overly cheery/mildly sarcastic and very playful. (that made me sound like a dog) I take academics incredibly serious and can't stand incompletion of assignments, but I also take friendships incredibly seriously and like to have fun on a daily basis (at least a few times a week).

I like to play sports, especially Ultimate and Table Tennis.

I would like to be around others doing math/computer science.

I'm younger than most freshmen; I'll only just have turned 17 walking into MIT (since I'm dropping out of high school and am in my junior year).

At school, I have about 10 to 20 really good friends and 2 or 3 absolutely amazing friends, though I talk to about 30-50% (800 kids total) of the school on a pretty friendly basis. I am pretty popular (class president 2 years/ class favorite 2 years). I also like talking to people--philosophically, politically, and sociably.

Business and entrepreneurship are definitely focuses of mine; I also want to expand and properly maintain my non profit organization, Online Math Circle | The World's First Online Math Circle.

I would just like a place in which I can have fun, have people who my personality would mesh with, and find support. Naturally, I am quite dominant, so being in a place in which I can lead when necessary would probably be good for me. Also, a place in which I can find and develop relationships with people with similar interests would be a major plus.

Thanks!

Oh, this is a hard question. As you can imagine, it’s hard to answer, because most people would be happy in several living groups, some of which are not obvious overlaps.

I think the best advice I can give is to check out the dorm tours during CPW, and to check out the dorm-sponsored social events as well. (You’ll have lots of time during early freshman year to check out fraternities and decided whether you’re interested, and to select a subset to investigate more intensively, since rush occurs during freshman year.)

If you’re concerned about the best place to stay during CPW, I’d definitely recommend asking to stay in a dorm on campus, as that’s where most of the events will be. Most of my friends who stayed across the river ended up sleeping in lounges so that they wouldn’t have to walk back :)

But yeah, definitely take full advantage of CPW / REX to explore the dorms. Rush is the week after REX, so don’t worry too much about finding a fraternity, if you’re interested in pledging - there will definitely be time afterwards. Even if you find that your first living group assignment fits you perfectly, it’s still really fun to explore all of the different dorms.

Thanks, you guys are too helpful!
Now, erm, ignorant question, but what is “REX”?

I think REX is residential exploration. More colloquially it’s called dorm rush. Freshmen look at all the dorms once they arrive on campus for orientation and can switch dorms or stay in the one they are temporarily housed in during orientation if they so choose.

The dorms are a good option. You can check during CPW.

My friend at MIT told me, generally speaking, West Campus has dorms for “normal” people while East Campus has dorms for niche groups (the one she described was a hippie engineering dorm). She also told me that I, who am “normal” (even though I consider myself extremely quirky, but, whatever), would probably pick something in West Campus.

Regardless of this advice, I think the key is tour the dorms during CPW to pick which ones are best for you.
