My daughter is a freshman in the Honors College at C of C. She is being encouraged to choose a major and has to select courses for next term. She thought she wanted to be a Bio Major but now is not so sure, although she has not ruled it out. She has always had a fascination for world civilization and foreign cultures. She is currently completing her Spanish requirement. Any thoughts on what may be the strongest departments with the best professors and most stimulating courses that may align with her interests?
Hi, I am extremely late but I am a current student at CofC Honors I hope that her registration was successful! Also keep in mind that she does not have to choose a major until sophomore year and even then she can change her mind! Public Health might be a good major for her or even the Latin and Carribbean Studies Major, International Studies (if she does this she will have to declare a second major which is not a big deal; Intl Studies requires less credit hours than most majors, Spanish, etc. If she is pre-med she can still major in anything she wants to and all she has to do is do the pre-med requirements (BIO 111/112 with labs, full year of intro chem, full year of intro organic, 2 semesters of biochem, and sociology/psychology). The African-American Studies Dept has some truly amazing professors that are doing incredible things within the community!
I was hoping you’d weigh in @Chopinspiano
Thank you for sharing your insights!!! It is my turn to apologize for the delayed response! I hope your semester went well and you have begun to enjoy some holiday cheer! I have just shared your recommendations with my daughter, who does seem to be pivoting towards International Studies although has not ruled out Public Health. May I ask you what you chose to major in? She is also interested in learning what professors and courses within the African American Studies Department you recommend as Charleston and the Low Country has played such an important role in both the slave trade, the retention of African traditions within the Gullah culture and the contribution of Americans of African descent to American culture in general and Southern culture in particular. She is currently in the process of dropping and adding courses. and I know would love to hear from you. Thank you!!!
I’m double majoring in biology and public health. I haven’t personally taken any classes because I can’t with my majors, but all of my friends recommend Dr. Greene. I’ve attended some of his guest lectures/teach-ins. He’s amazing. I suggest that she look at CofC’s list of special topics! Dr. Cressler is also good for religious studies; he oftens focuses on African-American history as well.
Chopinspiano,
Thank you for your recommendations! Great professors are so critical. I will definitely pass on your recommendations and suggestions to my daughter.
Have your found the coursework for the Public Health major to be inspiring?
I’ve only taken two classes so far, but it’s definitely a great path for anyone looking into medicine, health care policy, etc.
Does anyone know anything about the History Department or Comparative Religions?
