I have around a 1900 SAT and a 3.7 gpa.I am looking for private colleges in New England. What are some I could get into with my subpar SAT score?
Not in New England, but close:.Hartwick and Union.also U of New Hampshire. Lots of Catholic schools have a preppy vibe: Holy Cross is a maybe. Fairfeld. St. Anselm, St. Michaels, Stonehill, Providence.
Also Wheaton College in Mass. (Not the one in Illinois).
I know u said New England, but LeMoyne College in New York might fit.
Again not in New England but Gettysburg and St. Lawrence are worth a long look. Both are test optional. Dickinson is another.
You can give Bucknell a shot if you want to overdose on preppiness. If you can get another 150 points you can try Colgate and double overdose on preppiness.
Trinity and Connecticut College are worth a look and CC is test optional and its nickname is Abercrombe College.
Try Hobart & William Smith in upstate NY. Maybe Skidmore.
I really do not want to go out of new england and don’t think I would enjoy the south. My only concern with some of these colleges is that I have never heard of them before and I want to go to a well known college.Money isn’t a concern but I think it would be impractical to pay 60,000+ to go somewhere mediocre.
Well Pennsylvania is the furthest South that has been suggested. If you want to go to a well known classicly preppy new england school you will have to add 200 points for even a shot at Middlebury or Colby. A shot means just that an average chance of getting in.
Providence College
Any more suggestions?
Many well known New England and Northeast colleges are based on academic rigor and achievement. Your current SAT scores are below their medians. What is your definition of “mediocre”?
So if you want to go to what you consider a “well-known” college concentrate ion SATs, rigor and grades
Mediocre means not up to my standards.Every person in my family has gone to schools that are ranked in the top 30 colleges in the U.S…I have standards and don’t want to go to a college that is not pretogious because I have lots of pressure and I have worked extremely hard to get a good GPA so I feel as though it is a waste of my ability to go to a bad college.Due to money not being an issue I want to utilize it,why shouldn’t I want to go to Boston College and spend 60,000 there instead of wasting it at a college with a 75% acceptance rate when I know I am academically better than that.
You will need an extra 250 points to have any chance at a university or LAC of that type including Boston College plus a minimum of 4 AP classes, better to have a total of 6 - 8 when you apply.
By the way, many of the schools mentioned are top ranked.
If your score doesn’t improve or if your GPA is made up of standard classes, you will have to be more open to alternatives. Many students with 2200 SATs and 33 ACT with higher GPAS dont get in the schools you are targeting.
Some top schools are test optional but that will put more reliance on your GPA and a 3.7 at those schools is merely average.
Any special talents?
Fordham, Marist, Bentley.
Boston College is a wonderful school. Students that I know who have been accepted, some attended some not, have SAT scores above 2100 and unweighted GPA’s 3.85 and above with 7 or more AP classes with 4 or 5’s on each exam. All have had excellent EC’s and are geographically desirable. I would put some concentrated efforts into improving your scores if this is your target school.
These are of course just anecdotal stats YMMV. Best wishes.
Getting into a top thirty university is HIGHLY unlikely with a sub 2000 SAT score. BC is also a long shot. Anything “worse” than that is below your standards? Well, lower your standards.
@collegesearchhh sorry, but believing you are better than your stats isn’t going to get you into college. Your SAT scores are far lower than most of the applicants to the schools you want to go to. Your GPA isn’t bad, but it’s a little below average for most of these schools. You are not entitled to go to a school that is “up to your standards” any more than the next person who wants to, and many students have worked as hard, if not harder than you in order to get the stats needed for admission into these schools. Many colleges that aren’t in the top 30 are not bad or even mediocre, and a lot of students would feel privileged to go to them. To me, your attitude seems far more problematic than your SAT score.
I go to a very competitive high school so a 3.7 in hard classes is good. The SAT doesn’t measure my intelligence so it shouldn’t define my future.I don’t have an attitude problem, there is nothing wrong with not accepting mediocracy,I should want to succeed.
How many AP classes did you take as a junior and how many are you taking next year?
If you can’t improve your SATs and you want to try the test optional schools in New England that is an option. However, they are super selective and like a lottery ticket for all but the top 3% or 4% of students.
Look into Connecticut College. That might be a great fit for you. Holy Cross might be too, might.
I guess the OP has answered all of her own questions, since she apparently knows more about colleges than anyone posting here. A 3.7 is a good GPA, assuming that is unweighted and she has taken a rigorous courseload. I suggest looking at one or two highly selective test-optional colleges, such as Bates. After that, the obvious choices would be Trinity, Wheaton, Connecticut College, Skidmore, possibly Mount Holyoke, Colby, Providence College, and Clark.
