What are the benefits of having a family member working at your desired University?

Hi! My cousin works at U of C (University of Chicago). Will a recommendation letter from her mean anything? Thanks!!

Is your cousin a professor or on the admissions team? If not, then it won’t help at all.

@xFirefirex‌ , sadly no – but thanks!

Pretty much has to be a parent or grandparent, unless they’re in a position to have some serious pull, like a dean.

It might be helpful in the sense that if the University takes “interest” into consideration you could say that your cousin working there has exposed you to the awesomeness that is the Univ…and that might be a point in your favor since they may think you are more likely to matriculate if accepted.

As others have said, it depends on the family member and his/her position at the school. Now if s/he were the Admission Director’s SO, that might have a lot of clout.

Since we’re talking about UoC, the answer is def not – unless she were your custodial guardian or something.
