What are the best colleges by state?

I got this idea from another thread entitled state flagship universities.

I wanted to open the door up for debate as the best overall colleges by state based on selectivity, graduation/retention, endowment, SAT scores, prestige, etc.

Have fun deciding on who wins Massachusetts!

Well there already was a long thread like this...

But seeing as I just got to my college campus yesterday, I'll put in my two cents regarding Mass:

Amherst College

Harvard

MIT
...
1,000,000. Williams College

; )

I don't think anyone can really argue about south carolina:

Furman University

Wofford College

Clemson University

one could argue that clemson is better than wofford, but I do not believe so.

North Carolina:

Duke

Davidson

UNC

Wake Forest

Elon

NC State

The others.

Virginia

William & Mary

UVa

Virginia Tech

University of Richmond

The rest

Connecticut:

Yale

Wesleyan
US Coast Guard Academy

Connecticut College

Trinity College

UConn

Rhode Island:
1. Brown
2. Providence College
URI

New York:
1. Cornell
2. NYU
3. I want to say Colgate or Vasser...but I really don't know..

Publics:
1.Geneseo

California:
Undergrad:
Stanford
Caltech
Harvey Mudd
Pomona
Berkeley
Claremont-Mckenna
UCLA

Overall:

I'd place Columbia and the Cooper Union between Cornell and NYU. Binghampton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook are all pretty good publics.

Louisiana...ha.

Oh well, I'll play along.
My vote's on Tulane.

Have to disagree on VA...

1.) William and Mary
2.) University of Virginia
3.) Washington and Lee
4.) University of Richmond
5.) Virginia Tech
6.) James Madison University

Had trouble deciding b/w W&M and U.Va for #1... such different schools! It seems like W&M has more prestige for Virginians, but U.Va has more prestige for non-Virginians.

cherokeejew: I agree with California except I would just lump all the Claremont colleges together and place them where you have Harvey Mudd, and I would place USC right below them and above Berkeley. USC has a higher range of SAT scores for admitted students than Berkeley.

I'll start with some preliminaries

New Hampshire: Dartmouth College
Massachusetts: MIT/Harvard College/Williams College/Amherst

That's all for now.

^Give Delaware the UDel- it's the only school in Delaware that I even know of.

New York:

Washington State:

1) University of Washington
2) The rest

It's sad, but true.

i never understood why people continuously argue that w&m is better than uva. Any objective look leads you to the opposite conclusion. I hate to say it again, but the only people who think w&m is better than uva are people who have a connection to w&m.

California Privates: Stanford, USC, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount.

Vennard college in iowa? NO WAY! Grinnell for sure.
