I am going to be a junior and i need to know what colleges to tour. Any suggestions? I know the field i want to go into but i am not sure which schools are the best for it. I also would like a modern campus.
John Jay?
Roger Williams in RI has a fine program too.
There has been a large number of programs started over the last 20 years as interest in the field grew, largely driven by all the TV shows (CSI, NCIS etc.). John Jay is indeed a good program, and George Washington also had a good graduate program. But- I’m not as sure where the best undergrad programs are. Some unsolicited (but well intended) advice? It is a fairly niche field with limited job opportunities and not particularly great pay. I absolutely loved the jobs I had in the forensic field as a ‘first career’, and the skills have helped me even as I changed field. However, when you are starting out after you get your degree, it can be really disheartening to try to break in, particularly since so many colleges started forensic programs. The advice I have given to students over the years is that you may want to get a degree in a ‘pure’ science like chemistry or physics, and then move into forensics through internship or research opportunities. That way if there are no jobs available, you can also try pharma, research or other government jobs and not be as limited. There are limited places outside of crime labs that want to hire someone with a forensic degree. (generally speaking, and of course- YMMV)
