What are the best concentrations in business?

I’m definitely thinking about pursuing a business degree, but what concentrations would set me up best for a well paying job?

There are many majors that can set you up for a good job (ex. accounting, finance, IT, business analytics to name a few) – finding the right fit for your interests and aptitudes is important. IMO as a HS student (per your other post) there is no reason and not benefit to choosing you major now. You will get so much more information once you start college that will prepare you to make a much more informed decision. These are reasons to wait:

  1. When you start a business program at college you will take introductory courses in a number of business subjects including (but not limited to) finance and accounting. As you take these classes you should get a better sense of what each major would entail, how much you like it, how well you did in each class etc.

  2. You should also make an effort to get to know professors so you can ask any question you have about the major, typical jobs available when graduating with that major etc.

  3. Also once you are at college you can make an appointment and speak to someone at career placement to get a sense of what types of jobs people with these different majors can get.

  4. Do keep in mind that to become a CPA you now need 150 credits (most bachelors degrees are around 120 credits). Some people can get to the 150 credit mark using AP credits, summer courses, overloading etc. but many students go on for a one year Masters in Accounting.

There are all kinds of lists you can find with a quick google search of high paying business majors. But for YOU to be successful you will need to find a major/career that dovetails with YOUR own talents, interests etc. It is too early to decide on a major. Sounds good, I understand. Do you think business is the field for me, considering I’m a good writer, I’m into math, and I’m good with computers? If not, what else does this sound like to you?

If you are looking at purely the highest paying business jobs at the bachelors degree level, it is investment banking at a firm such as Goldman’s Sachs, JP Morgan, etc. They hire the brightest students from top undergraduate business schools like Penn (Wharton), UC Berkeley (Haas), Cornell, Michigan, etc. The hours are long (can be 7 days a week, 10 - 12+ hours a day). Finance and accounting can be good too and also other positions such business IT, quantitative positions (requires advance math related beyond 1st year calculus) and conulting are high pay.
