What are the chances of a Petroleum Engineering Students with a FELON! to find work after graduation

I went to prison in 2007, did 5 years and was released in 2012. Now I am a junior Petroleum Engineering student at UH and I have been wondering for a while now what to expect once I graduate and start looking for work; also when searching for an internship this year.

Is there anyone knowledgeable that could tell me if the major companies like Shell, Chevron, Exxon, etc. or any of the other companies have rules set in place where they don’t consider an applicant with a felony on their record at all? Is there a 7-year-old rule that some companies could have implemented? If so, would it be from the charge date or the release date, or as long as you’ve done things to overshadow your past, they wouldn’t mind? I currently hold an overall GPA of 3.80 and also have leadership skills. I would like to do as much as I can to set myself apart from others so what else should someone in my position be doing to make themselves seem very attractive to the oil and gas companies?

I can’t directly answer your question because I don’t know how energy companies deal with people who have felonies on their records. But I will say that I find it damn impressive that someone who spent five years in prison had the wherewithal to get a Petroleum Engineering degree.

You can expect the same thing the non-felony graduates can expect: a really bleak job market in the oil industry.
