What are the chances of getting into college with a disciplinary record?

This week I was searched and they found a small amount of marijuana before school started. I'm a junior and I have good grades and no other offenses. I'm currently suspended for five days and might be expelled. I am going to find out this monday. If i am, they will give me the option of transferring to another high school in the district. I won't have a criminal record for it though.
I'm wondering if I've completely ruined my chances of going to a cal state university or if there is any way I'd still be able to be admitted.

I love it! They found a “small amount” is like saying you were a “little” pregnant. (Okay, if you’re a guy, then your GF was a “little” prego.) Why did “they” search you in the first place? Police have to have probable cause.

To answer your question: DO NOT lie that this happened. If you did and they found out, then you would def. never get in. But, if you admit your mistake and apologize for disobeying the law (CA may be trying to legalize marijuana, but it’s not legal yet!) then you may have a chance.

actually, a state can’t make marijuana a “legal” drug so as long as it’s federally illegal.

see Raich v Gonzalez

also, considering this is a disciplinary record and not a police record, I’ll assume that it was conducted by school officials.

In that case, school officials are allowed to search a student’s belongings. Schools’ right to search is not unlimited in power, but it’s pretty close

see New Jersey v T.L.O.

that being said, I think it’s important to be upfront and show that you’ve changed; the wrong thing to do would be to try to conceal it, as limabeans pointed out.

well i was in this case(not possession of marijuana, but a disciplanary action) about 2 weeks ago. I was going to get suspended for something that was considered a disciplinary action, and i asked my counselor and the assistant principal and they both said that the colleges don’t see your disciplinary record when the school sends ur transcript. However if the college asks for ur disciplinary record then u should tell them if not then i think u shuld b fine. btw if i were u i would ask the counselor if this would go to the colleges or not.
hopefully that helped =)

^ I know on all my college apps there is a section that asks if you have a disciplinary record. I think you ‘sign’ on the common app that you promise to notify the school in case of any updates your disciplinary record.

thanks,
and i only mentioned a “small” amount because i was only in trouble for possessing it. I wasn’t under the suspicious of selling it. They told me that because it was such a small amount, that I wouldn’t have to go to court or have it on my criminal record.
I wasn’t planning on acting like it didn’t happen but what are the chances of me getting into a cal state university with them knowing i’ve been suspended? and possibly expelled? Is it very unlikely for them to accept me? would a letter of recommendation be very beneficial to have?
