What are the chances

Your unweighted GPA (95) is very high. Maybe with your 6 AP classes this year, your weighted GPA will increase. Good Luck!

I am not playing on my race and i actually hate the fact that it is used but i can not change reality so please stop being so bitter and realize i have no part in affirmative action. Also i would like you to spend a day in a smart black man's shoes and see how wondeful school would be for you. Maybe if you understood how hard it is to get respect among other african americans for education and than you will understand the system. If you do not and you have no idea than please do not lash out at me because you have absolutely no right too.

Northstarmom - I attached a resume that highlighted all the karate tournaments i won, including nationals, and also my dreams to enter the olympics in 2008. I also wrote about my various roles in student government. I wrote about wrestling and how important it is for me. I also believe that doing wrestling is something more important than just having a leadership position. It invloves weight loss and terrible practices that affect the grades on everyone on the team and i think that adcoms would know that, but im not sure.
Also I'm really sorry I keep posting, this is my last time and i feel really bad about it now. The only reason i post so much and i applied to so many schools is becasue i am very insecure and i am scared to death about not getting into a top college. I know I'm making a bigger deal than i have to but i cant help it and im very emotional about it. Im supposed to be a tough wrestler but i cried all day in school when i got deffered and i am still not recovered from how bad i felt that day. Again I am sorry but i just need to do this because it actually helps a little and i want to thank you for all your help.

Stanmaster,
It sounds like you did your best with your applications. Allow yourself to feel good about the hard work you've done in h.s. and with your applications.

It is very important to not base your selfworth on getting accepted to a place like Harvard. A Harvard acceptance, degree doesn't guarantee a perfect, happy or successful life, no matter how one defines "success." By whatever standards that one chooses to use, there will be people deferred and rejected by Harvard even though "better" people got in. As mentioned before, the adcoms choose well rounded classes, and that may be that some people with rare factors get in while others with outstanding, but more prevalent factors, do not.

When it comes to who gets in EA, the only candidates accepted are the ones that Harvard is 100% sure would get in when the entire pool of applications is in. Those applicants are amazingly wonderful (and there also are amazingly wonderful applicants who will never get in!). It is not a good idea to panic when not getting accepted to Harvard EA. It is a good idea to make sure that one is applying to some match and safety schools. No one, though, needs to apply to 20 colleges! That's a waste of your time and money.

Do not listen to people who suggest that you can get into any school that you wish to. I am sure that due to your impressive accomplishments, you are justifiably admired by many teachers, GCs and students. However, there are many wonderful people who apply to HPYS, and for that reason, despite your accomplishments, you may be rejected. Acccept that and move on.

My strong suggestion is to pick one of the places where you've already been admitted to as your top choice. When you get some other acceptances (and I anticipate you will get some more acceptances), you can always change your mind. But right now, be content with what you have. Make a point, too, of telling the people who say "You can get in anywhere," how horrendous the competition is at HPYS and similar schools, and tell them that for that reason you will be thrilled to go to whatever school you've already been admitted to.

That will take some of the heat off you if you end up being like the 9 out of 10 Harvard applicants who get rejection letters.

This also is what worked for me. I did end up getting a Harvard acceptance, but until that time, my favorite school was GWU, my safety school, where I got accepted to well before hearing from the Ivies. I truly loved GWU and ended up going there for grad school, and having a great experience. Make sure that your safeties are places that you, too, would love attending.

Now, enjoy New Years Eve. :)

Ok thanks for the advice and it truly means alot to me. I worked hard on each app and now i will just have to wait. I am already into Michigan Honors so i guess i will be happy with that since its an amazing program anyway. Ill hear from cornell soon so hopefully that will take some pressure off if i get in since i have been talking to the director of minority affairs in ILR and they sent me a fee waive, i think its looking good. Thanks again

Stanmaster,
You keep saying that you are "insecure." Would you be happier going to a college that where your stats would put you closer to the top of the applicant pool?

While places like HPYS accept only students whom adcoms know can succeed in the college, and although the black graduation rates at such colleges are very high --ranging up to 95%, it may be difficult to feel comfortable at such schools if one is very insecure.

Your depression and panic over being deferred seems unusually high to me. Your stats indicate clearly that you are among the 85% of Harvard applicants with the ability to graduate from Harvard if accepted. However, your insecurity concerns me. I'm wondering whether you'd be able to plunge in and enjoy the interesting peers and extensive opportunities or if you'd spend 4 years worrying about whether you could do the work.

Well i was afraid of that over the summer too when I went to harvard summer school. My roomates and neighbors had an average SAT of about 1550 and they were all top of their class like top 3. I was insecure at first but than i realized that scores and stuff dont matter when you have a fresh plate. i didnt let it get to me and i ended up getting two A- in my classes which was tops among everybody i knew. so i realize that college will be a fresh start for me to do well in so im not worried because I had a blast over the summer and i had the most fun in my life. College seems so wondeful to me because when i am away from home i am a completetly different person. just ask my roomates : they thought i was a crazy party animal while here everyone thinks im a worreid smart kid. so dont worry about me in college because i am the biggest worrier of all and i am excited as hell to be going and living with all those intelligent people.

"n I went to harvard summer school. My roomates and neighbors had an average SAT of about 1550 and they were all top of their class like top 3. I was insecure at first but than i realized that scores and stuff dont matter when you have a fresh plate"

You do realize that you probably have a better idea of what Harvard is like and what kinds of students fit in and get accepted than do most of the people who are responding to your chances post? You know real Harvard students and professors, and probably got lots of inside info over the summer about admissions.

Do you see how much of a waste of your time it is to be posting here? Please go out and have some fun.

Yeah i do see it now. Thanks for all your help and trust me now that applications are done I will be the biggest party animal for the second semester. I think i owe it to myself to have fun after all these years of holding back who i really am. thanks again. you really are like a mentor that i really needed

Stanmaster,
Good luck with everything. When you get your acceptances, please PM me -- whether or not they include Harvard. I am curious about where you'll end up going, and I wish you the best!

Ill do that for sure. thanks again.

I just wanted to know if i should express mail all my teacher and counselor reccommendations when they complete them since im going to be late or should i just let them send it in themselves. Will UPENN, Brown, Northwestern, Georgetown, Notre Dame, and Boston College not take it at all if they are late?

Northstarmom - I was just named captain of the wrestling team. Should I write a letter to all my colleges about this? I think it is a substantial leadership position and since I expressed my love for the sport throughout my app I would think it is a good idea but I'm not sure.

Congratulations! That's a nice achievement, and you have nothing to lose by letting the colleges know about that.

I have a 2nd degree black belt in karate and some ppl told me on here that it would not help me that much do u have a black belt?

No but I am a national competitor and I compete at the national level. I am one of the best in the nation for my specific division.

Hey guys. I just wanted to keep you updated on how im doing in the college process now. I was real scared when you guys labeled all my schools reaches but they ended up not being that and I am very happy. I was accepted to Binghamton, Michigan Honors (full scholarship), Tulane Honors(half scholarship), UCLA, Cornell, and Washington University in St.Loius. I received likely letters from Northwestern, Duke, and Dartmouth. I wasnt denied anywhere yet. Also Harvard doesnt look like a long shot anymore because I was invited for a second interview on long island where they said that 1/3 of the 23 kids invited will be excited. Thanks for all your help earlier and Ill keep you guys posted.
