What are the chances?

Yes, that is probably a school he will apply to. I'm pretty sure he can get in there and the academics are really good. That might be a good fit for him too. But, I don't know about their Bio department. I love their propaganda too. It is sooo creative!

I think he should apply to Harvard. By the way you describe him, he is not the average 2400 person. He seems very unique, def try Harvard but only if his notion is that he likes it a lot but thinks he wont get in. If he isn't comfortable there, then he shouldn't apply. Also try U of C, great academic rigor.

Parent22Boys: Your son sounds like a great kid. The worst thing he could do is "resume building" his junior year -- colleges see through that.

He should stay true to himself and his interests -- and convey that in his application. Many kids get into great colleges without doing sports or being president of umpteen clubs or doing community service (although his tutoring certainly qualifies as community service in the eyes of many colleges).

None of us can predict what his "chances" are -- we will never get to see his complete application, with teacher recs and essays, etc. He is clearly a strong candidate, but yes, you are right that many strong students don't get accepted.

You might want to check out the Parents Forum. There are a lot of experienced parents there who can help you help your son build a reasonable list of safeties/matches/reaches to apply to and make suggestions for how to present himself in the best possible way in the application process. Just watch out -- this place can become truly addicting!

Thank you, Machiavelli. I will let him know. When we go to see Brown in Feb, we will also see Harvard and MIT, but it is really Brown we are concentrating on. If he falls in love with Harvard, then maybe he will apply. He just doesn't think he has a chance. But, maybe they have too many well-rounded kids and need a Latin scholar that can translate Catullus. :)

Firedrain, thank you for the suggestion of the Parent forum. I'm new here, so I haven't even explored that far. I just went straight to the Brown forum.

I know his teacher recs will be outstanding. Two of his teachers have already asked to write them (English and Latin) and said they would be unforgettable recommendations.

I have a feeling this place IS addicting. Of course, talking about my kid is addicting. Typical parent, I suppose ... sigh ...
