How difficult is it the premed program - and does it really offer an advantage when applying to medical schools? Also, I realize that WashU is used as a 'safety' school for many - but what about WashU makes it an 'Ivy-reject' haven as opposed to schools of similar caliber? I am obviously biased in my opinions (look at the sn..lol,) but I'm just curious how WashU garnered the reputation is now has.

I don’t know anything about the premed program, so can’t help you there.

I guess a select few schools get to be “ivy-reject” schools or safety schools, while others don’t. My school joins yours in that regard

I have no idea why they have garnered those reputations.

Rich and Overrated

WashU is definately not considered anybodys safety school.

i heard their pre-med program is VERY strong

they waitlist almost everybody

I think people have perceived WashU as a school that practices Tufts Syndrome, but frankly WashU has garnered a good rep on its own. The typical hardworking Ivy-or-die CCer probably doesn’t think too highly of WashU, but I think that’s more because so many people here are self-conscious about their school’s prestige, plus these typical CCers are regional-prejudiced. From where I am, it is considered a highly-desired institution (and I’m in the Tri-state Area). It really isn’t a school for Ivy rejects; in terms of prestige, people in my area view it as being at the Duke/Cornell/Rice level.

EDIT: In case it comes up, I’m not using the term Tufts Syndrome to put down Tufts but rather just to illustrate my point. Tufts is very similar to WashU in that it is another school underrated by CC.

Part of me really wants to like WashU, but I look at the three kids who have gone there from my school, and they’re all huge d-bags who were clearly swayed by its US News ranking.

Wash U’s awesome; I think it’s a sweet school. Definitely better than Rice and probably a little better than Cornell. They have really great graduate school placement from what I hear.

^ thats b s
personally i think wash u is no better than Rice AND Cornell, esp. considering the premed program, rice is wayyy much better than wash u. its overrated because its rich.
also the surrounding area is prettty crappy. (middle of st louis what do you expect?)

A top 20 school of LACs style.

a lot of people hat WashU on CC, this definitely isn’t the place to ask this question

Wash U is certainly not better than Rice or Cornell – it is definitely better than Duke though.

^Says the guy who arguably goes to the worst Ivy League school…

no way is it better than duke.

^Says the guy who doesn’t go to an Ivy League school…

no way is it worse than duke.

Seriously? You guys are arguing apples vs. oranges here. And as far as I know, none of you are even affiliated with either school.

yeah im going to stop before this argument gets ■■■■■■■■.

WashU is the school that waitlisted a huge d-bag that I know (it was his safety. OWNED!!!). I give them some massive props for that. In my opinion, he just took classes and tried hard to get into college (one EC, took all the classes known for grade inflation and easy workloads, sucked up to teachers, etc.).

My perception of Wash U is that is has tufts syndrome/ tends to take richer kids.
EX: My friend got into Harvard, Yale, Dart–> Wait listed at wash U…

I was also waitlisted at Wash U but got into better schools (northwestern, Amherst, Pomona), I think because I needed the financial aid.

Roughly on par with schools like: Duke, Cornell, Rice, Northwestern, JHU, etc.

WashU was a hidden gem. People didn’t know about it because it was in St. Louis, but St. Louisans knew that it was high quality and comparable to the schools morsmordre mentions (Duke, Cornell, Rice, NU, JHU, etc.). It started expanding and it did SMART things to expand its national presence, but you still have a bunch of people from the Northeast who aren’t very knowledgeable who think that St. Louis is some kind of cow-town. (They have NO idea that there is big-time money in St. Louis, and suburbs that could rival any NE suburb.) Look, if you moved it to Chicago, it’d be Northwestern. It’s a great school, and ignore the haters on CC.
