What are the top Art colleges in America?

I want the top Art colleges that will lead me toward creating my own comic books and creating my own shows such as Avatar the last Airbender type of stuff!

A quick Google search for “top art schools” or “top graphic design schools” or “top animation schools” will yield you a number of results. Google is your friend!

Avatar the last airbender was hands-down my favorite show growing up though, so I wish you luck in making something similar!

Cal arts. Though it’s really expensive

^indeed. RISD too (as in it’s also really good. No idea if it’s expensive relative to other art schools or not).

Pratt.

Before you get your hopes up, are you aware that many/most/all of these schools are very expensive and give crappy aid?

Are your parents ok with paying all the high costs associated with these schools?

It’s okay…I’m going into the military first and after I leave I’ll have my GI Bill to pay for everything which every Art school I go to rather it’s Cal arts or RISD

I never heard of many famous artists graduating from Pratt

But yeah the reason why I’ asking for the top art colleges so when I leave the military I can go apply for those schools and then used what I learned to create Anime style cartoons over here in America! That’s my dream really to create Anime style cartoons in America. It’s not full on anime but its gonna be a combination of American cartoons and Anime character drawing styles.

@LastAirbender you obviously haven’t heard of Robert Redford

Mapplethorpe attended Pratt but I don’t think he graduated.

EDIT/UPDATE: How could I forget Stefan Sagmeister? And my kid is going into graphic design so shame on me.

Famous is good, but EMPLOYABLE would be better, in my view. The question you should be interested in is how reputable is the school’s program (animation, in your case) and whether those students get jobs in their field after graduating.

BTW, be careful about showing anime character drawings to your schools of interest during a portfolio review. You will want to familiarize yourself with what some of these nationally-ranked programs want to see in a portfolio. For animation, especially, they will be focusing on your observational drawing skills. Get to know the portfolio requirements which will be posted on the school’s website.

@LastAirbender I forgot to add earlier that MCAD actually offers a comic book major. It might be the only major art college to do so.

MassArt is a great school for illustration, my sister went there

RISD, a well known fact amongst artists…

Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, FL, is very strong in Animation.

When I think of illustration, I think MICA, RISD, Art Center, and SVA. When I think of character design and computer animation, I think Ringling and CalArts.

SVA (School of Visual Arts) started as a School for comics. It has a strong program. Also, SVA has two strong undergrad concentrations in animation: 2d and 3d. You can also take courses in both concentrations.

@LastAirBender - The last time I looked, the GI Bill only covered tuition for an in-state public (plus stipend). I’d be surprised if the cost of a private art school would be covered. Also, looking at other threads about NPD, it seems that colleges don’t want to see anime art in your portfolio. @mom2collegekids probably knows more.

I’ll third that comment about no anime - D1 was specifically told to get rid of it. (She had attended NPD during Jr. year). The art schools specifically want to see the student’s unique artistic style.

And for painting, please?

@Shadeland check out MICA and SAIC.
