What are university options other than community college for C students? PA, NJ, MD / North East

Empireapple - that is all the more reason DS is interested in Temple as a #1 choice. Sounds like the climate challenged neighbor made a good decision.

Apply Temple Option and focus on excellent essays. Applying early helps, yes.

MYOS1634 I know Temple has become more competitive so I am assuming recommendations will not hold much weight?

They do , but for temple option the essays are the most important.

Rowan u in NJ
about 35 min from philly
expanding regionally and has a new tech start up center and Med schools. Following the strategy that Drexel laid out to expand and grow

MYOS134 - Yes right the essay in the Temple Option.

Fleishmo6 - That is interesting. Tech start up center at Rowan u ? We will have to check that out.

can’t delete ?

I would look at some of the smaller private Unis in New Jersey, such as Fairleigh Dickinson, William Patterson, Rider, Montclair State and Monmouth.

Also, some of the Catholic universities may be achievable such as Seton Hall, Manhattan, Siena, St. Bonaventure, Kings (PA) LeMoyne, Duquesne and Catholic University (CU and Duquesne are test optional and I think others in this list may be)

They are doing a really good job with growth. I think they are the only University to have both an MD School and a DO school.

^ Thanks. I meant to include Rowan but forgot.

Thank you londondad and fleishm06. Fairleigh Dickinson is on our list the Florham campus. And we will
definitely check out Rowan U. As for Duquesne - I went to graduate school there after Pitt. It served my needs as
a graduate student.

@dspflyer Rowan Is test optional and they have a special program for students whose stats would normally not get them into Rowan. It’s called Rowan Select.

Also, 3.0/4 GPA is actually a middle “B”.

Thank you very much for this link. I heard of Rowan but only in passing. It seems like an up and coming university with good expansion.

And while I think you are totally right about a 3.0 being a solid “B”… every single reference to a GPA of 3.0 on any college site or article relates it to a struggling student, a student qualified for only C+ / B- colleges, a GPA that will only get you into schools that are community college or state universities. I realize now more than ever that all universities in the 21st centuries are marketing machines. Even if they do accept a lot of 3.0 students, they don’t want to advertise that.

The CDS, or collegedata, will tell you what percentage students had a GPA 3.00-3.25, 3.25-3.5, etc. It’s very telling.
3.0 isn’t great, but it’s definitely worth an acceptance to quite a few good directionals… sometimes even with merit if there’s something of interest in the application (great writing and course rigor at test optional colleges, strong test scores.)

Possible match/safety: Frostburg State University, Frostburg Maryland?

I’m not familiar with Frostburg but will check it out.

Have you looked at Towson and UMBC? Both of those get high marks here at CC and elsewhere.

londondad - Towson was on our original list but it didn’t seem promising regarding admission. I think we should still keep it and visit the campus.

^ Good strategy. Towson has become a much better Uni over the past 5 - 10 years. This is partially due to better students as UMCP gets harder and harder for in-state students to get into. Still, however, the acceptance rate is 73%, so that means that it is worth a shot.
