What are you sending to your plebes?

THAT is really a good idea--TV summaries-- or spoilers. Was this from a web site or self-made?
Great project for the other kids to do if self-made.

TV Summaries! THAT is a really good idea. Were these available from a web site or self-made?

I know there is not much on during the summer, but some shows he would have an interest in and small re-caps might be good. In any event, I can see HUGE benefit for during the AC year.

Also, I sometimes tear out local news articles or, for example, I sent the Time magazine article on Lincoln.

Bill0510- I can just see you all booing and throwing stuff at me for what I'm about to say.... Yep, USMMA only lasts 17 days. Its Day 14 today. YAY!! Its called Indoc though and not Plebe summer. Before you all boot me outta here :) there is a pretty good reason for it. The kids will begin their classes the day after Indoc ends. They are more pressed for time due to their semesters at sea. Four months during their 3rd class year and 6 during their 2nd class year. Half of the kids go out while the other half studies on campus. The Vice Admiral told us that these kids do four years of school in three - i.e. physics I & II, calc I & II plus 8 other classes all in the first year equalling about 24 credit hours at a civy college. Indoc will be the easiest thing my kid does. So its just a bit different is all. Boy, do I feel greedy wanting these last few days done! You guys have so far to go yet.

Twoofme - you're so sweet to your sister! I knew I shoulda had girls! My other son (age 23 mind you!) has been on a long distance harrassment campaign sending his Plebe brother computer generated photos of his brother's car wrecked into trees with the word, "OOOPS" written on it and a lovely photo of himself eating chicken and dumplings with the words, "Wish you were here". And those are only the ones I know of! Hang in there all! Keep counting down!

Bill,

Spoilers are something the younger generation is pretty familiar with - at least in our neighborhood. I think if you google the tv show and the word spoiler you'll find the info. I think you can get them for books also, i.e., Harry Potter. Of course I have no time for tv as I am on college confidential too much and busy scouring the Internet for yet more pix of those new cadets at WP.

We're also sending news articles about the Cubs and Bulls. You can choose your own teams. ;)

Jamzmom:
pictures are too funny!!!
thanks for the chuckle!
at lease the USMMA mids have a nice outdoor pool to keep cool in this hot weather!
best of luck!

Hey-The mids have Chesapeake Bay!

jamzmom: the pictures are funny!

I don't know about USMMA and the other service academies, but the Plebes at USNA have very limited personal time to read or write letters.

Thanks momoftwins and Jamzmom for the comments. I try to be as supportive as I can. I can only imagine how much the letters and care packages mean to her (and to all the other plebes), so I do my best to keep on top of that so she knows how much we love her and are proud of her! :)

Too bad my sister didn't watch that much TV. She doesn't really have a favorite show except for maybe JAG and a couple others which don't show during the summer and oh yes, re-runs. She was more of a music person. The spoilers and summaries are definitely a good idea!....so are the news articles, haven't thought of that. In a "note" that sis sent, she said they were beginning to get their daily news articles and menus for memorization. So perhaps she is getting the news anyway? (although what time do they have to read?)

Anyhow, sister would absolutely HATE me if I spoiled say, Harry Potter for her. If ever I tried to spoil something for her, she promptly covered here ears and said NOO! while walking away. haha. Normally I'd do it because it was funny, but now I guess i'm not in the mood seeing as I wish she were here. ;)

Momoftwins, where is your other daughter going to college? anywhere near WP or home? and what is she doing over the summer? just curious...

My other daughter will be studying architecture at the U of Illinois. It's closer to home than WP, but far enough to keep her happy. She was going to work but then got sick and has been recuperating. She'll be very ready to start school next month.

Which school will you be going to?

I'll be attending George Washington University in Washington D.C. Conveniently located only 30 minutes away from USNA!

sorry to hear she got sick...atleast she really got a re****l vacation!

hmmm, why can't I say r-e-s-t-f-u-l ? not a bad word is it?

twofme,

You'll have an unbelievable experience at GW. And it will be fabulous if you and your sister are able to see each other once in a while. I'm sure it will be good for both of you. I just hope she can send you some packages (lol).

Should I assume from your screen name that you are identical?

oddly enough, no, we are Fraternal but look exactly alike. No one can ever tell us apart, which stinks sometimes. Gotten used to it though and don't seem to mind as much. I guess we don't look alike anymore as her hair is really short and mine is really long... :)

What about your girls?

Momoftwins: I take it you're from Chicago? A friend of mine (actually more of my sister's friend) has a son who is a 4/C at Westpoint. Wonder if they have met. They are from Downer's Grove. I am a born and raised Chicagoan so when I saw the Bulls/Cubs thing, I thought, "Hey, wonder if they know Thomas". :)
NAPS05mom (Tricia)

twofme,

My girls are fraternal also - as a matter of fact they could go into a new classification of twins called very fraternal. Somebody recently asked one how she likes being a twin and she just said that not only does she not know anything else, but it must really stink not to have a twin. How could all the singletons stand it?

NAPS05mom,

Yes, we're from the Chicago area, but haven't met too many upperclassmen or their families yet. However, there is a parents' club picnic this weekend. If you want to pm me with their last name, I'll be on the lookout. And if you're from Chicago and you're lonely for the city, I'll send you some sports or Chicago politics articles also. :) - but no food until after Beast.

Ya know, I've been married almost twenty years, with two older sisters before that. . . now ladies, that's enough friendly chit-chat. :)
Or is this just a passive/agressive lull because everybody is typed/stressed/depressed/worried out?

HEY, we're originally from southern IL & huge Cubs fans. Last summer, we caught the train out of Downers Grove (where my niece is in the school of pharmacy there) everyday for four days to go into the city & see the Cubs/Cards series. My pick of the best place to eat is Harry Carey's. What fun that was! At USMMA on Aug 3, the Plebes get to take in the Mets game and my son had a fit because he'll miss the Cubs up there by two or three days.

Twofme - don't be sad... Just think, in a few short weeks, you'll be closer and your sister will be done with Beast. What fun you two will have. Start planning now for those short visits! I wish I had a twin!

Thanks Jamzmom, definitely looking forward to it!

So have any of you registered at PlebeSummer.com? They have tons of pictures...have you seen your plebe?

Yes, Bill. Just a little girl talk. Maybe we need our own board. Or we could do a bit more trash talking?

Actually, I'm just a bit sad as we have had no new Beast pix in 3 whole days.

yeah, you have to pay to see the pics on Plebesummer.com and mom isn't willing to pay which I don't see why. She's weird. The site adds pictures daily too! The official USNA website lacks in the picture department which sucks...

I've heard the actual photos are kind of pricey. Any experience with this?
