Online education is coming in a big way in different forms. Learners are joining from all parts of the world to avail of the education imparted by experienced professors for very little or no cost. This they can do from the comfort of their home.Next take the case of online tutoring . Yup, i second you. I’m a big fan of MOOCs now. After going thru a class in courera last year, i decided to do an online Masters (earlier i never considered online education a serious thought).
This is the future. I think the for profit, business making institutions will fade out eventually.
I think it’s a good opportunity for those who want to combine study and work, or also for those who cannot come to the college or university for many reasons.

MOOCs are probably just a fad. They may be good for learning on certain broad topics, but I don’t think they are good for earning a degree and getting the full learning experience on said broad topic. There is only so much depth that can be accomplished in a MOOC.
At an online school (or more specifically, the online branch of a school that has an actual campus, such as Columbia College), you are able to get attention from professors, interact with students and form relationships with them, with all of this occurring online. It’s been years since online education was first introduced and it is getting to the point now where the education you receive online can be as high quality as the education you receive on a campus.
In short, you can trust online education, but only if it comes from a traditional school with traditional professors teaching the courses.
Yeah I agree with the pros that you’ve said in your post but I read recently that online education is more conducive for teaching specific courses and not for teaching subjects like humanities, languages, history, etc. What do you think?
Online education has been around for 10-15 years. Before online education there was Distance Education. You know what’s changed? Not much actually. MOOCs are going nowhere. The completion rates are abysmal.
As someone who has participated in online education at the high school level for multiple grades, I can say from experience that it depends on the person doing the work. You must be self motivated or you will get nowhere. Personally, I didn’t have that problem but online education sometimes became frustrating for me because I could not see my teacher face to face, and I believe I would have benefited from that interaction. You miss out on things such as field trips, extracurriculars, group projects and activities, and the overall high school experience. Courses such as biology, chemistry, and other courses that require hands on activities cannot be done the usual way. If you are okay with that, then online education is a great alternative to traditional education, but many people struggle with it. The good things about online education are that you can work at your own pace (this enabled me to do three years worth of school in two years) and you can work from the comfort of your own home, but I think that’s it. Maybe my online school was different, but we didn’t have tutors. It was more like an independent study.
Overall, it depends on the student. Some can handle it, but many more cannot.
One thing you will definitely learn from studying online is discipline! If you don’t apply yourself, it will show in your grades. Also don’t attend a for-profit school. There are many well-known universities teaching online these days.
