What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

Here’s a reference for bike riding on Maui (it’s really not conducive for bike riding, unlike Big Island, which celebrates bike riding). Favorite Bicycling Routes - Maui Bicycling League

As a former plaintiff personal injury attorney, I have to say our state is terrible for cyclists generally. Even when it was clearly the vehicle driver’s fault, the cyclists inevitably lose if the case gets to a jury. The roads are crowded and in bad condition. Unlike OR and other nicer more bicycle friendly venues, there was not much between the cyclist and the cars, even for “bike paths” and I’ve seen way too many accidents.

I’ve given up bike riding — too dangerous.

Oh heavy mom ‘sigh’. He’s determined to stay in training mode for his upcoming big race. No chance in heck I can talk him out of riding on Maui. Some days it would be nice to just be able to put them back in the car seat and take them home where it’s safe.

I always thought Autoslash was a come on. Today I read your post and thought I’ll try it…but they’d better not ask me for a credit card #…they didn’t and already they found a lower price, by more than $50. Not earth shattering, but $50 is $50!

We rented a car in Phoenix for nine days. It was over $650 when we rented it. When we dropped it of…it was “only” $528. Ok.

I tried that autoslash and it was almost 4-5 times what I had at Costco car rental. But I booked it a while back, like last year for this year(2021), my fall foliage trip starting in Boston(2022).

I haven’t traveled since 2019. Back then, I mostly got best rates for car rentals on Costco, by rechecking rates regularly and booking when rate dropped before canceling older, higher reservation. I especially liked no extra charge for spouse to also drive the car.

For a while, AAA was getting me good rates on Hertz and would match or beat whatever I found on a competitor but that stopped after a few years.

Sometime AAA rates are better than Costco rates, I usually check on both before I book. My last trip to Maine which is 2018 and I booked with AAA.

Lots of corporate rates are findable on line.

Here is a code that saves a ton sometimes we can give to friends, family, etc. Add it to the Account# under where you enter the dates and location info on National. Checked it a minute ago and a normal reservation in ATL from May 5-7 was over $450 and $165 with code. Y’all are free to use it. XZ41PGA

Works great and continually checks for new deals that can be pretty significant sometimes. Hopefully it keeps going down. Check the code in my other post and see if that helps.

Just because you can check rates with a corporate code and even reserve with one does not mean that rate will be honored. We always used my old Avis code for the company for whom I used to work. There were no issues for years. My husband reserved with it again last summer but was subsequently advised that a company ID or other proof of employment would be required to rent the vehicle at that reserved rate.

Costco’s pricing includes a second driver. Is that also the case for AAA?

We are traveling to Southern CA next month for DD’s graduation and had plans to spend an extra week down there, 1/2 in the LA area and 1/2 in Diego. We booked 3 nights at the Hotel Del Coronado using Hilton points, but those nights coincidentally happen to fall on Memorial Day weekend, and now H is worried about it being way too crowded. It doesn’t help that the reviews I’ve been reading on TripAdvisor are horrible. Any suggestions from anyone familiar with San Diego? If we want to bail on Coronado, are there any other areas you would recommend? The caveat is that it has to be in the San Diego area as we already have flights booked out of SAN that would be too expensive to change, and we also were hoping to use our Hilton points before their value drops any more than they have already.

The Hotel Del is a beautiful property in a stunning location and they did a great restoration recently, but I agree the reviews look concerning. It will definitely be crowded - of course, that will be the case most places on the holiday weekend. If you want to be beachfront, the Del is your only real choice in the Hilton family. Otherwise you could consider the properties in Little Italy, the Embarcadero, and Liberty Station. Don’t do the ones that say Mission Valley or Sea World.

Are your priorities a full service resort hotel experience, or just somewhere relaxing? The Homewood Suites Liberty Station (one of the few properties I’ve stayed at here) is a popular choice and out of the tourist traffic on a beautiful landscaped waterway close to the restaurants in Liberty Station. If you want to walk out the door and be around restaurants and tourist attractions and such, people on TA recommend the Carte. You could ferry over to Coronado and spend the day there if you like.

Can you pm the code? I can’t find it.

Forgot to add to post but sent PM.

Autoslash works great. Mainly they just give continued updates as to price drops. But YOU have to do the canceling of any prior reservation and get back on-site to re-reserve at the lower price.

Some places in San Diego that I would recommend are the Hilton at Torrey Pines, La Valencia or Grande Colonial in La Jolla or L’Auberge in Del Mar.

I’m not 100% sure but I was the one that did all the driving.
