If your spouse is the second/additional driver, there’s no additional charge from any major car rental company, as long as s/he is over 25. Costco’s additional driver benefit isn’t limited to spouses, however.
I second looking at Hilton at Torrey Pines; this hotel could be less crowded on weekends because it is located in a (lovely) business park and is mostly used by business travelers. We love staying there, but it can be quite a drive to the city. There is great hiking nearby and of course, golf, but not much else that would not require driving bb
I don’t know how, but that code just kicked $250 off the current pricing! I owe you!
Please double check with National to see if any documentation will be required when using that code. See what the reservation says in the small print on use of the discount. It’s very possible that you could go to pick up the car and learn that they won’t provide the car without that documentation, or that you have to pay full rental to get it. Car companies have been cracking down on unauthorized use of corporate codes and code sharing.
Yay! Glad to hear it. I imagine it’s very lucrative right now since it’s a fixed rate and the car rental companies seem to be gouging people.
@BunsenBurner - I agree that Hilton Torrey Pines is a bit off the beaten path, but there are a couple of great places to eat close by. The Farmer and the Seahorse is very close and the Lodge at Torrey Pines also has great restaurant options.
Other hotels nearby with more places to eat around them are the Embassy Suites La Jolla or the Hyatt Regency at Aventine. If you stay at either of these hotels it is not a far walk to our new trolley extension which can get you to Little Italy, downtown or Petco Park.
I read (and re-read) the fine print. Zip.
You’re absolutely right. For some discount codes, car rental places may ask for proof that you belong to certain organizations at the time you pick up your car. Even for the Costco rental, they occasionally ask for your Costco ID.
agree! The restaurant at the Hilton is quite good for a drink and a quick bite, too.
I’m going to Baltimore around the 4th of July for my Daughter’s World championship tournament (big brag! She made the team!) Wow is everything expensive! Rental car was almost $500 for 7 days. Hotels very expensive. Now my other daughter wants to come and airfare has doubled since I bought my tickets just 3 weeks ago.
I’ve been to Baltimore in the summer. It is HOT. WHY oh why are you people all trying to come on my vacation!!?
We like the Pacific Terrace Hotel and the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego.
@Lemonlee is hoping to use HHonors points at a Hilton property.
When I visit my kid in San Diego, we go to Coronado beach and pretend we are staying at the hotel. I would love to stay there!
Unfortunately numerous online reviews are discussing inadequate noisy dirty rooms, rude staff who also give inaccurate and misleading information, long waits for service, valet, etc., guests not being able to get restaurant reservations, ocean view labeled room looking over construction, and more. It sounds like they have the same staffing issues as so many other places yet are still offering more than they can handle. The public areas are all praised. We always enjoy dropping by when we are on Coronado.
Well we only experience the public areas so I can have my fantasy stay I guess
I stayed at the Hotel Del many years ago. I thought the rooms were very small and cramped (if you opened the door to the hall, it barely cleared the bed - no night table could fit there. It was a really long walk to my room. Everything was really really expensive (like a tube of sunscreen was $10 and that was 30+ years ago).
Many people at the conference I was at had nicer rooms at the hotel across the street, and they were at all the dinners and meetings I was at (in the public rooms), eating the same food, just had a nicer room and bathroom.
I love the Estancia La Jolla hotel.
Thank you to everyone for the San Diego tips. Checking out our options now, but really appreciate all the advice.
So my mom and her friend went to Naples to visit family Easter Sunday. They drove because the friend is nervous to fly with Covid. They arrived back home to PA on 4/26 and my mom tested positive for Covid. Her friend didn’t. Both vaccinated and boosted - mom once, friend 2 boosts.
My mom still tested positive on May 4th and yesterday called to tell me my dad, also vaccinated with 2 boosters tested positive.
They both describe it as feeling like the flu and say it is very unpleasant- not like a cold at all.
That may be true for some codes that have gotten out into the public, and sure, they have the right to ask for proof of employment. Most don’t, in my experience.
