What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

Miraculously S and DILs flight from Newark to Detroit went off without a hitch this afternoon. I was shocked. Must have helped traveling NOT on Friday or Monday of the holiday weekend

My son’s mid afternoon flight today from New Orleans to Chicago was 3 hours delayed, as the first leg was 3 hours late leaving Dallas. He then had a 2.5 hour drive to his in-laws lake house. Lets just say I am glad I don’t have to deal with his grumpiness!

@taverngirl That’s what didn’t work!

@Htas - they tried to go in— no walk ins allowed (they are in SF). Only available appointment is in…. San Diego!! And its the day before they fly to Chicago and then to Ireland. I will be amazed if this works.

When friends needed an immediate passport in the spring they found the appointment availability fluid and spent a couple hours refreshing the availability screen to find one in a closer city. Good luck to them!

Thanks. I am gonna stay out of it at this point. To make matters worse, they are flying American to SD and to Chicago, and American just had that big glitch allowing pilots to remove themselves from the schedule.

Here:

@noready: What is our policy for making appointments?

We have disabled the online booking system for Urgent Travel Service to ensure our very limited appointments go to applicants who need them for urgent travel. You must call us if you want to schedule a new appointment or change your existing appointment.

You can buy them online from Apple or Amazon. They are about $100 for 4 or slightly more per AirTag for one.

Euro is at parity with dollar now, feel like we are getting a 20% discount.

Yikes, don’t envy them that trip.

One of mine recently came back from Europe and had challenges in each direction. My thoughts on travel are that you need to bring your patience and that people are at their worst.

There was a missed connection overnight in SFO, specifically at that airport they are warning travelers about short staff and long check in lines and to arrive 3 hours early. CLEAR saved a ton of time, if yours are on a budget they might try a trial or by the month.

Short staffing seems to really be impacting baggage, luggage took 3 days to arrive on outbound. Missed connections on the way back meant a standby flight where they were out of room for carryons and gate checked it, which meant no carryon for unexpected overnight. Lesson learned is to cram a few pairs of clean underwear and your chargers in personal bag or smallest carryon.

Or from Costco for just over $80 for 4.

I don’t see those at Costco.com…did you get them in a warehouse?

Yes, they’re available in store, or via Instacart (at a higher price, of course).

I don’t know what they will do, burn it will be a miracle if they pull this off, especially with a 4 Mo old.

Older s’s wife is flying there for a conference and is bringing our 4 1/2 yr old granddaughter. They never got around to getting TSA precheck. Yikes.

That’s terrible. I hope they can get it. Any chance or getting something in Chicago? I feel for them.

We just got our passports renewed and my husbands came back first. New passport was enclosed. He got the old passport back about a week later. Still waiting for the kids’ passports. They definitely aren’t as nimble as they used to be.

Underwear, toothbrush, deodorant, a fresh shirt and essential health and beauty aids (saline, contacts, and shampoo you like). This will go a long way to comfort if your luggage is delayed. Going to a conference? Bring that dress/jacket also. My husband once paid $850 for a pair of shoes in Zuerich.

dont know if they tried chicago… good thought

Just returned from a 6 day trip. Going out (DEN to BWI) was crowded, especially TSA in Denver, but everything was on time. Coming back was a breeze and the flight was not full. They said there were thousands of flights cancelled or delayed in the past week, but I didn’t notice any of that. I didn’t even see any long lines at airport counters or see any long and winding lines anywhere (except TSA, but that was moving). I was on SWA concourses.

Flight to France was fine, no problems. Lines were normal. Did not need to fill out Personal Locator Forms. Ended up having a short delay returning to Logan. Airport was empty on arrival. Sailed through customs.
