@thumper1 The state I reside does not require returning travelers to quarantine unless they are returning from NY NJ, etc. The state I am traveling to never had stay at home order or closed retail shops. As far as I know I am fully compliant with states’ requirements. Did we say to let the states decide for themselves and assume they know best what is good for them? If your state chose to require a quarantine, you should do that. Since my state did not, I don’t need to. If HI requires quarantine with a few cases, that’s their business. I won’t try to give advice on what to do. I would simply not go there.
My personal view is the virus is here to stay and what we need is everyone finds a new normal way of life with the virus they are comfortable with, a new of way living. It won’t be the same for everyone. I think we need to be tolerant with what others do.
I’m open to what others do, as long as they do so with everyone else in mind. That doesnt seem to be happening. I’m still upset that so few wear masks. I could typically avoid them in a store. I can avoid large gatherings when possible. But I occasionally need to fly, and was quite upset that so many refused to wear masks. I have little choice in that scenario.
Yes the virus is here to stay so we all need to think of others and be considerate. I won’t be tolerant of selfish people.
^^^ Easier said than done.
Face it, pre/during/post COVID people are not considerate. It’s awful but that’s the way it is.
“I won’t be tolerant of selfish people” - so what will you do? How will you handle those inconsiderate people???
I will speak up, especially on Facebook.
I find it strange that jurisdictions are prohibiting vacation rentals but hotels might be open. You would think that visitors would be far better off with cooking and laundry facilities. Our City allows hotels for returning people in quarantine, essential workers isolating etc. I am sure those people would much prefer a functioning apartment. It is crazy to think how people would get groceries or meals delivered to a hotel room that barely has a mini frig
However, someone just bought a house next door to me. Lied to the Sellers and have turned it into a short term vacation rental. It has been booked for last 4 weekends. So hosts seem to be ignoring the local restrictions and we don’t have any enforcement
I’m not trying to be combative, but speaking up on Facebook isn’t going to have any effect on the person in front of you and behind you at the store or in the airport without a mask.
That’s the issue,. Many short term rentals are in neighborhoods- houses, condos etc. The governor of Florida wants the tourist germs confined to hotels for now. Fortunately, I’m in a condo with the ability to prepare food and bring food in. There are a few loopholes.
Well…my plans to see my adult D in early June in Portland are still on…currently. She called me Sunday and would very much like to see me as we planned (earlier this month she was up in the air and we agreed to revisit the conversation). We would likely just “hang out” together…cook, do some art, take some long drives, some hikes. Next decision is will I stay with her, or elsewhere (I’m fully letting her guide this), and if I fly (I have a ticket, purchased before SAH measures, so it’s able to be offered as a credit for future travel) or if I drive (which would mean a hotel night along the way). We still have about 10 days to decide all that. And she may still change her mind about it all. Which is fine. I’m ok either way. I would prefer to stay with her, but that’s a thing all in itself!
I’d be …not at all content to fly with a lot of people who were not wearing masks.
I don’t know where people got “flying with no mask.” I didn’t take a poll but the ones I saw were all wearing masks on my trips. It wouldn’t bother me that much if some people are not wearing a mask. Air in the plane is filtered, better filtered than any mask. I keep my air on full and keep stale air away from me. I am comfortable with breathing filter air.
Remind me again what is being selfish? If the state allows you travel and you travel, is that selfish? Or is it selfish if someone does something that your “moral” decided not “good”? Aren’t we mostly old enough to know In life things aren’t simple to draw a line and put good on one side, bad on the other?
Almost every passenger and crew member ion my flight Saturday was wearing a mask. One older woman without- could have been a medical situation.
Just heard on the radio. Southwest now has more new bookings than cancellations. Some sort of corner turned.
I can see why states would have hotels open before VRBO’s. A hotel especially a chain will have an organization behind them to sanitize rooms and surfaces. They have the means to buy more sophisticated cleaning machines and have the staff to not just hire but people to write procedures for how to clean.
A short term rental has only the owner or property management to do this.
My husband has had to call in a cleaning company to sanitize work spaces. They bring a team in and have a machine that sprays disinfectant and wipes down all of the surfaces. For a possible COVID case. Costs is around $10,000 per site.
If a hotel is found to be transmitted COVID, they have the means to hire a team for a deep cleaning. I’m not sure I would trust an owner of a VRBO or AirBnB to have the money to do that.
Just another perspective on why they would open hotels before single homes or apartment rentals.
When I say I won’t be “tolerant,” I meant I won’t say, “Oh, that’s nice!” if I hear of people getting together at parties or people attending my parents’ church. It’s not nice. I can’t do anything about strangers, I realize that. But I darned well can let my dad and uncle know I’m not happy that they are meeting, singing, and having communion out of one cup. I can tell my sister-in-law she can’t visit us in Maine unless she quarantines for two weeks, whether or not SHE thinks she needs to.
I think you will find that extended stay hotels will have more appeal in the future
Or a hotel, and some hotels with national names are still owned and controlled by local owners, has housekeepers who have high expectations to clean X number of rooms in a short time whereas a vacation rental owner may have 4-6 hours between guests, even on a same day turnover, to devote to thorough cleaning of just that home.
In each case, there are times and places where the vacation rental is way better than the motel/hotel and the reverse would be true in other places. It’s not the standards, it’s who implements them.
The vacation rental I’m in right now posted online and in the unit the stringent cleaning protocols. This unit hasn’t been occupied in several weeks. It was immaculate when we arrived and I trusted the sanitation completely. I just can’t let myself get too worked up about whether someone from the hard hit northeast left virus cooties around here. I think hotels are going to do the best they can, but agree with @somemom that it will not always to reliable.
I don’t disagree with you. I was pointing out reasons why states would open hotels before other type of rentals. It sounds like that is what they are doing in Florida. Maybe I’m wrong, it’s not about regulations. Maybe hotels have a better lobbyist.
I think that both situations can be problematic. I’ve cleaned a VRBO cottage before. It was hard and there was not enough time to get everything as clean as we would have liked before the next rental came.
My relative who has a rental complains all the time about finding cleaning people. They don’t clean that well, they don’t show up. They are really hard to find anyone who wants to clean and services are too expensive.
Maybe it’s where she has a rental property. But it’s been a major topic of conversation every year.
