I wonder if rental places will be inclined to SHOW (somehow prove) that they have used the services of a complete cleaning company to sanitize between renters. It would be a plus for them to be able to give this confidence.
I sort of feel like hotels have so much more room turnover in guests. One room could have 5 different groups of people (or person) in a weeks time. I feel like an AirBNB is more likely to have less people “in and out”.
Adventure of eating out! The state I am visiting now allows dining n. They had paper menu and outdoor seating. I enjoyed eating out far more than I expected.
If people are doing allowed activities in their respective state, I don’t see any reason to shame them for doing it.
One of my best friends is a bigwig at Marriott. She is furloughed out of Corporate down to 1 day/week and it looks like down to nothing real soon. They have closed most of their hotels. The hotels that remain open are only at 25 to 30 percent occupancy. They cannot break even at those nbrs so there are a lot of staff cuts at those hotels also.
I keep asking who are the 25% staying at the hotels?? This is at the top luxury hotels in the company such as the Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara. It can’t be essential workers staying there. It’s got to be wealthy people getting out of town
I have no idea what the Bacara Resort is like. I would think their services are limited under the CA order. If their services are limited what benefit the wealthy get at the resort they couldn’t find in their own Posh home?
A friend of a cousin, who owns a very large hotel with a golf course in Westchester County, has been sheltering hospital workers (approx 350 people) who don’t want to bring virus home to their families. My cousin contacted me on behalf of his friend to get a contact and email addy in Governors office from my husband, as his property has a 150k sq foot “command center” which at one time was owned by Pfizer, that he wanted to donate to the state to use during this crises. The state was thrilled about his offer.
My daughter (age 31) is scheduled to take a week long vacation in the Outer Banks at a house rental the first week of June with her boyfriend’s family - his parents, his sister/husband/baby and then D and her BF. I think they might have preferred to cancel the trip (they have all been pretty strict quarantining) but because North Carolina is “open” they would lose all $$$.
D is a little nervous about it all. The plan is to drive down is for them all to continue quarantining at home prior to going down, drive separate cars down all in one day, pack most of their food or do a grocery delivery, enjoy the private beach home, maybe get take out one or two times and basically just enjoy the house, pool, beach. Not the vacation they planned but still a change of scenery and not blowing their $ spent.
I sure hope it works out. I will certainly be holding my breath for that long car ride down they have.
@abasket Cuz just got back from OBX as she has several investment properties in Avon. Restaurant were all take-out, supermarkets were well stocked, limited capacity of shoppers in store, masks were worn by employees and shoppers. Beaches are never overly crowded and plenty of open space to enjoy.
Seems like they have common sense and a plan, they will be fine. Tell them to enjoy!
If everyone isolates prior to going somewhere, there’s no chance of catching it from each other. They could even share the ride instead of taking separate cars. The virus has a shelf life. If you wait it out via isolation, you know you don’t have it - not even asymptomatically.
This is how med school lad came to us. There were cases in his hospital on his floor (not his patients). He stayed in his apartment for two weeks - just in case - when med school “released” their students, then came straight here. We enjoyed the time together (almost two months) before he went back this past Sunday.
HI is using the same system - having everyone isolate for two weeks, then, as far as we know, it’s gone even if it were there. They can’t trust everyone to have done it prior to coming, esp since airlines are involved (workers, etc). It’s one of the appealing things for us if the virus is still around this coming winter as we will have the time to do the isolation and relish the idea of going somewhere safe.
I have a friend who’s 80, and his wife is 65. They are going to Myrtle Beach for a week within the next couple of weeks. I worry about that decision, especially given his health, but they are adults
They had plans to go to England earlier in the year, but they got canceled.
I chose a VRBO over a hotel for our mid-June trip because we have our own yard with a dock, on a lake. I like the outdoor dining table and chairs. I like that I can open the windows when I arrive to get some fresh air. I will also spend at least an hour wiping down high contact surfaces. It appears that there are no close neighbors. I’m hoping that the blank space on the rental’s calendar, before we arrive, continues.
In the Southwest something just changed, I had 10 different contacts Monday, mostly about this holiday weekend as my prior guests had to cancel (C19.) People seemed enthusiastic. We do have several days between bookings which is not nice for the bank account versus normal times, but good for the cleaners and the guests, so I’m cool with it. And I do feel like people are safer in MY homes than a hotel. I’ve provided them info on the local grocery click list options, too, in hopes if they are are shedding virus they can keep it to themselves. They are all people going out on a lake, so not too much interaction with the community is has to happen.
@Iglooo@coralbrook I haven’t been out to the Bacara resort since the stay at home order but if someone wanted to take a driving holiday it would be a nice spot to do it. It’s outside of town, a spacious property right on a beach. The beach isn’t easily reachable from anywhere else. The grounds are spacious giving one room to stroll and distance. I don’t know if the pools are allowed to be open. One could do easily do takeout and eat on the beach. (Beaches in Santa Barbara county are open for lounging). The golf course next to it reopened. Bacara also has tennis courts which I assume are open. Bacara in my opinion is a destination resort. It’s not a spot to stay if you want the SB City experience. The other luxury hotels in the area are closed.
My travel experience (FL to TN) today was about like Saturday’s but without the rental car counter hitch. FL airport was very empty and we dropped the keys at the un-staffed rental car counter. Boarding (no lining up) on Southwest is in groups of 10- distanced. All middle seats empty and a bunch of other seats as well. 80 minutes and done. No airline magazines anymore. TN airport had more people than Saturday, but very light crowd. Mask compliance in airports and on plane was very good.
@abasket , I guess the one consolation is it would be very rare for your daughter to succumb to Covid at her age. But i know it’s tough because we’ve all been doing the right thing and to then start being social brings a little anxiety.
We are going to the lake this weekend. My plans until I see the trend in my state decline much more, is to social distance happy hour. We have friends that live there year round and invited us to her cottage on Saturday for dinner. Her kids, Wives will be there. I’m very uncomfortable with that. I can already see her eyeballs roll when I decline. They’ve always been more risk takers and I know they think we’re too much of worry-warts. But they do live in a county that has very low cases and maybe 1 death. My county has had 500 deaths.
I’m in a hotel right now. It’s one connected to a hospital so everyone is a patient or family. Pretty full, as usual. Restaurant is carry out or room service. I got prepared meals in a clamshelll container to heat in our room, cooked by restaurant kitchen and in a self serve refrigerated case. Wiped them down and washed my hands here in our room, so we don’t have to go back out.
The cleaning crews were busy when we got here and they have new huge vacuums that probably have super filters. Saw them spraying and wiping light switches and door handles. Still I’m a bit nervous and have washed my hands about a hundred times. Back home I only went out for groceries once a week and DH didn’t go anywhere.
Driving was fine. Light traffic and rest areas were clean and had the doors propped open so it was pretty much touch free. Took several waves of the hand to get th auto-flusher to work, but that’s normal.
We have been invited to visit a friend’s new home in Colorado mountains next month. Still thinking about it. Would mean a hotel night each direction but once we got there we could happily stay on their 20 acres for a week with no contact in town. They have been diligent about isolating and WFH.
I don’t know what happened with AA. I am on a connecting flight to home. It is very full. The middle seat is occupied in my row! I am hoping they will come around move the middle person.
We are still hoping to attend a wedding in Denver,…in August…but we are sort of doubtful it will happen.
We have a place rented in Ocean City NJ the middle of September. We are up in the air about that. The change of scenery will be nice, and the places we eat at are all doing carry out (including our favorite carry out fish place). We have a nice porch we can sit on, and we can walk to the boardwalk. I guess the only thing we won’t be able to do is eat at a restaurant…but that’s ok.
Going forward, travel will not be the same for a long time. Lower to middle class (if the latter even remains) should get ready for budget travel and camping. The extra wealthy will be able to travel to their lavish villas and private islands no matter what… but vacationing as we know it for middle class will never be the same as the airfares will have go up and any remaining hotels will have to raise their rates. Just like it used to be back in the pre-mass tourism days. There will be a lot of hurt in the places that heavily relied on tourism. We will not be rushing to buy our winter nest property yet. Hope I am wrong…
