What are your thoughts on this?

I am a freshman at the University of Hartford, where I have a full-tuition scholarship for an accelerated program where I will earn my B.S.B.A. and M.B.A. in four years.

In spite of this, I am thinking of transferring to a more prestigious institution such as UChicago (my dream school, I was waitlisted back in high school), NYU, UMichigan, etc.

Furthermore, I am not transferring simply due to the prestige. It is more complex than that. I actually graduated from the University’s high school on campus, so my first year of college is actually my fifth year on campus. My freshman year here feels as if I am reliving high school, grade 13 so to speak.

Ultimately, I have always wanted to go to a prestigious school outside of CT, however the opportunity at my current institution was too good to pass up.

Lastly, I have realized over my first year that I want to study education instead of business. The scholarship is contingent that I stay within the business school as a business major, meaning I can only do a minor in education if I stay at my current school. Furthermore, my university does not offer the particular aspects of education that I want to pursue: learning sciences, pedagogy, and a general study of education.

What do you guys think? Should I transfer now or invest in a good PhD program/second masters at a prestigious school?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and any input is greatly appreciated!!!

Do you have money to study elsewhere?

Are you living on campus or commuting? What is the cost to you now vs. the cost at another school? How much can your parents afford to pay?

What kind of education do you want to pursue? I don’t really understand what you mean in your previous post. Generally, majoring in education would lead to a career in teaching elementary school, middle school, high school, or special ed. Is that what you mean? IMO, it wouldn’t make sense to transfer to a “prestigious” school to study education; instead, look at schools that are strong in education majors.

Could you stay at your current school for another year to get your basic courses for free, then transfer? Is your problem with the campus, or with the people? See what Hartford would offer you in financial aid if you switch majors. If you’re confident you will never enter the business field, staying in business is probably a waste of time and money.

  1. WHat do you want to teach? If you want to teach business, One way to go is to get your business degree…and then get a master in secondary education. My daughter wanted to be a math teacher, so she majored in math, and then got a masters in Secondary Mathematical Education.

  2. If you want to be an elementary school teacher in Conn, then go to your states teacher school.

  3. How will you pay for all of this?

  4. Why would you need a phD for business or teaching?
