What attracts you to U of M?

I am currently looking for a good school to transfer into and right now I do not currently have any favorite schools to look at, so why not University of Michigan? I was wondering what do you personally find favorable in the university that you can't find anywhere else?

Thanks

If I had to pick one thing that sets Michigan apart it would have to be its all-around excellence. Great academics in every discipline imaginable, talented but down-to-earth student body, awesome resources and campus layout, great campus life and school spirit, incredible culture offerings in the performing and visual arts, amazing athletic tradition, fun and pleasant college town setting (with lots of cafes, restaurants, bookstores, sports bars etc...), great graduate school and/or professional placement. In short, a perfect university! hehe

I agree with Alexandre. Schools like Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and Yale may be extremely good in a few areas - but none to my knowledge are as strong in almost every field like UM (only "top 10" programs listed) -- engineering, medicine, law, business, pharmacy, music, public policy, education, nursing, and social work. People change their majors a lot, so you can't go wrong with being at UM. And hey, if you like sports, we got that too. =)

Those are excellent responses. I chose UM because of its location, well-roundedness, and diversity.

I chose UM because of: weather ( I love freezing temperatures), aerospace engeneering at top rank, some projects at UM are concentrated on NASA, and most importantly the university is far away from my parents.

oh and I forgot...% of women in UM is like 60%. less competition, I hope.

Dragon of Orange Stars, Michigan is not 60% female. It is more like 52% female. Still, it is a decent ratio. All the other reasons you list for going to michigan are good! hehe But turst me, once you are done with Michigan, you will not be able to slit your reasons in one paragraph. You are in for a real treat.

umm...it's free.

oh shut up kenny, you're going to have a great time.

although schools like harvard clearly also are all-around excellent, the depth of their excellence is only comparable in several areas. for example, economics is probably far superior at harvard, but harvard's music program is laughably small. they teach music history, but the performance opportunities are solely extracurricular. on the other hand, michigan has one of the best music schools in the country.

anyway, michigan's a great place with a lot of different people. it's the quintessential university. i would highly recommend transferring.

Well, I chose it for grad school and the reasons were simple: best program, best money.

But I can say why I've been increasingly proud to be affiliated with it (short list):

Great diversity of religions, nationalities, ethnicities, backgrounds on campus.

Academic strength that is nearly unmatched in its breadth.

A leader in many things (not just rankings, but in discoveries and advances, things that make the papers and that people around the world admire Michigan for and make a difference in people's lives and the human endeavor).

Fabulous cultural opportunities of all sorts, all concentrated in a very accessible set of venues.

Interesting, ambitious, creative, dedicated, savvy, opinionated, fun students.

A big interest in "service" on campus (that is, community service).

Really nice springs and falls (no comment on the other two seasons, heh)

Sports traditions that are great fun to take part in.

The sense that this is a unique place (public, yet world-class; the breadth mentioned earlier).

Really interesting faculty.

A medical center to be really proud of.

Actually Freckles, no program can be "far superior" to Michigan in Econoimics since Michigan has one of the top 10 Econ programs. With the exception of Chemistry, no university has a serious edge over Michigan in any field. That's what makes Michigan so unique.

Hoedown, great list of reasons.

Michigan is a great school (academic and extracurricular wise) that is only between an hour and an hour and a half drive from home. This means that it's not too far from where I live but yet not down the street. Plus, everyone that I've been in contact with from Michigan (students and faculty) has been extremely helpful and kind. They're very personable. I don't care what other people say about the people at Michigan being "stuck up." It's not true! There's even something there for everyone to get involved in at Michigan no matter what his/her interests are. That in itself is something for me to look forward to next year. :)

Hoedown, the medical center at Michigan IS a great place. However, I think that I've personally seen too much of it in my short life already. I've had to make way too many trips to Ann Arbor to see doctors at Michigan in the past. All I can say is that I'm glad that I'm going to go into the humanities! ;)

does Cornell also have many top 10 departments??

Yes, Cornell has many top 10 programs. Cornell is as academically sound and well rounded as they come.
