Hello guys! Thank you guys so much for taking the time to help out this super stressed out senior
I would really appreciate it if I could get some help on how to enhance my application for Cornell engineering.
- I am an international student intending to apply regular decision (I'm indian btw)
-I am currently in the last year of IB (International Baccalaureate program) with HL Math, Physics and Business along with SL Chemistry, Spanish and Language and Literature
STATS
- Average gpa = 4.2
- class rank = top 5%
- I took the SAT before but was not satisfied so could you suggest what SAT score would be appropriate?
- Intend to take SAT Subjects in November for Chemistry 1 and Math 1
- What would be a good IB score for Cornell engineering? {as we didn’t get our predicted scores yet}
EXTRACURRICULARS
- Founder of Science Club at my school (President)
- Internship at an Oil and Gas Engineering Firm
- National Honor Society
- Math Honor Society (PR)
- Art Honor Society
-Dance Honor Society (Treasurer)
- Malaysian Global Outreach (volunteer service) (Treasurer)
- Student Council (Grade rep, student-parent liaison officer)
So what do you guys think? How else can I build my application as a possible candidate??
Thank you so much!!! This is deeply appreciated!!
Here is the information straight from Cornell. At the bottom you will find the SAT ranges. https://www.engineering.cornell.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/first-year-applicants
As a rising senior, your application in terms of ECs is already built. Focus on your test scores and your essays. RD admission changes are low for everyone, and even more so for international students. As you know, your changes are better at Purdue but there is little financial aid at a state school if you need it.
Are you planning on studying chem e by any chance? (Asking because of the oil and gas internship). If so, Purdue has an amazing program!
Yes! I am planning on either Chemical or Biomedical engineering. Well do you think I may stand a chance or just forget about it?
Thank you so much for your reply earlier!
If you can get your SAT scores in the upper end of their range than you have a chance. The acceptance rates are just very low in general so it’s best to also have match and safety schools on your list too. Overall acceptance rate was at an all time low this year at around 10% but that includes the ED applicants so it’s even lower for RD.
Heyyy! I am glad I finally found someone who is thinking of majoring in Biomedical engineering!
I am an Indian too. what universities are you applying to?
Purdue
USC
Wisconsin
…pretty much
how about you? Are applying from India?
As stated above, hight SAT scores will be important. Also keep up your good grades and put good effort into your applications / essays.
Note - Cornell is expensive (I have not checked recently , but I assume over $60,000/year). from what I’ve read here ,International applicants should not expect scholarships or financial aid. So make sure your parents can afford it.
Aww! Thank you!! But what does high SAT score mean? Like 1400’s - 1600?
This web site says 1550 (of 1600) for Cornell - https://prepexpert.com/cornell-acceptance-rate/ . You could probably find better insights at the Colleges / Cornell forum.
BUT do you think my extracurriculars would seem interesting?
Yes, your extracurriculars are interesting. But that would probably be true for many Cornell applicants.
Why are you so interested in Cornell (only 16% admit rate)? You could work hard to write an interesting essay that explains your interest.
Yes I am from Mumbai, india. You?
Can we chat on facebook or any other social site? I wish to know your stats! I can not tell you how excited I am to know finally some indian is considering BIomedical engineering
Ohh ahahha! I live in Malaysia though! Sure! Add me on facebook!
I did some more digging and I realized that they have more women in engineering than men. Do you think that means the competitiveness would be more competitive? How do you suggest that I can make my application attractive??
