What can I do to prepare to become an Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) member in high school a

..and as a college freshman? (Howard Class of 2018)

I just received my acceptance to Howard University (Class of 2018). I really want to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I have wanted to since I was little. I have always been impressed by Alpha Kappa Appa's pledge of sisterhood and service. Not just looking cute and partying.

I am still in high school but is there anything that I can do now to start and prepare for the Rush process and the subsequent events. I know the requirements and I have already reviewed all the paperwork.

1.)But before I get too far, can I even apply as a Freshman? I know they need one grading period of grades and they look at community service from the last two years. 2.)Does that have to be from the two years that I am in college?

3.)What are things that I can start doing now or in the fall at Howard that will set me apart? 4.)What are things that I should not do?

I know not to call them sisters unless I am a member because they are not my sister. I know do not wear pink and green to the Rush.

5.)Once I get to Howard how can I get the current members to know me because I heard that that is important?

I am confident and outgoing. 6.)I do a lot of community service now but how can I express my positive attributes to the members that will be voting on me getting in or not?

7.)Should I try and talk to current members before the Rush? 8.)Or not? 9.)If so how many?

9.)I heard be involved in the school but also the community are there any activities that they are particularly impressed by?

10.)What are any other little things that they like or do not like? No matter how small they may seem.

11.)I'm not a legacy, is that bad?

12.)If I am not admitted the first time I try am I allowed to apply again in future years or no?

13.)I know it is not all about looks, and it is a negative stigma that Alpha Kappa Alpha get, but is there a way I should dress and do my hair? 13.)Is there a way that I should not dress or do my hair?

14.)At the Rush, other than not wearing pink and green, how should I dress? 15.)How should I not dress? 16.)What exactly should I do at the Rush?

17.)I only know one former Alpha Kappa Alpha member (she lives in New Orleans and graduated 30 years ago) so how can I get to know them and have them get to know me?

18.)I heard that I should be humble in interaction with members but they also want leaders. 19.)What is the best way to accomplish both?

20.)Should I get signatures for community service work that I have done in high school? 21.)Or should I wait for the work that I start doing once I am at Howard?

22.)How selective is the process specifically at Howard?

23.)What is the overall attitude and personality that the members look for?

24.)Are there certain clubs that I should do? 25.)Are there clubs that I should not do? Is there any type of person that I should avoid?

26.)Does my parents background matter? 27.)Is there any money involved in the application process?

28.)Basically I am asking what is the best path to take to get admitted into Alpha Kappa Alpha?

I know it is really selective but I am thinking and planning early and hopefully it will help.

I'm sorry this is no long but any information you could give me would be helpful.

I admire your passion but girl, relax lol. I am a high school senior who is also interested in AKA but as far as I’m concerned potentials can’t pledge until sophomore year, and that is if they are lucky enough for the sorority to be looking for new members that year. I have done research about this process because I had the same questions you have. Just enjoy your freshman year, make a good name for yourself on campus, show up to their campus events , and demonstrate interest without being too pushy. There are also youtube vids and articles about this. Hope I helped :)

Learn the sorority’s history, carry yourself like a lady of character and dignity, attend events offered by the chapter and relax.

It’s sort of late, but see if there is a local mentoring activity. Usually called Pearls. Local sorority chapters are usuually distributing scholarship applications soon as well.

But also relax, enjoy, get involved, and don’t draw uneccesary negative attention.

Good luck…nd there is always grad chapter!

I was an AKA at Howard in the seventies, as was a sister and two aunts. My aunt was at Howard around 1918.
