What can this F do to me taking the A.P exam

Hi, I am an 11th grader taking an A.P course. I am mostly a straight A student, but for this AP class, I got an F for both second and first term… I am trying so hard to make a change for third and fourth term, but let’s just say I get an F for those terms as well. What can that do to my high school credits and to my AP exam? Will I still be able to take the AP exam? Do I have to do summer school? Do my credits for that class go away? It is not a required class so I do not need to repeat it but I do want to know about how could this affect these situations.

Not sure about your school’s policy but you can take the AP exam without passing the class but you would not get any HS credits for Failing a course. Even if it is not a required course, your F grades will remain on your transcript and could heavily impact your chances at many colleges depending upon where you plan to apply. If you want to remove your F from your transcript, then you would need to repeat the exact same class.

I suggest you talk to your HS guidance counselor about your situation.

Okay sounds like a plan. I don’t have the ability to ask them until I enter school tomorrow, but do you know if summer school could get my the missing credits because I do not want to repeat the 11th grade for missing credits. Again I am an almost straight a student besides this

If the summer school offers the AP class so you can repeat, then you get your HS credits if you pass. All this is dependent upon your HS and school district. My son’s HS/School district did not offer AP classes in the summer, so if they had to be repeated, it would be the following year.

Again, you need to talk to your GC and figure out your plan. Also ask your GC if they will let you take the AP exam. Some HS’s may not allow you to take the AP exam if you failed the HS course.

Okay thank you so much!

The F grades will eliminate getting high school credit for the course, and could cause you not to meet minimum course requirements for college if it is a course needed for that (e.g. if AP art history is your only art course and you apply to colleges that want to see a year of art). It will also worsen your GPA and look bad in holistic review by a college admission reader.

How you do on the AP test has effects independent of your course grade, although if you earned F grades in the course, it is much less likely that you will earn a good score on the AP test.

You must know what caused you to fail the first two terms - too much work, didn’t understand the material, etc. Are you certain you can correct this for the second two terms? If not, can you replace this class with a non-AP version? A friend of my daughter’s failed both semesters of APUSH and had to take US history (non AP/honors) over the summer to ensure she had the credit she needed to graduate. Her counselor never should have let her take the second semester after having failed the first.
