Oh, cool, we love the Theater at Monmouth!
Two weeks ago I was up your way for a few days. For lunch I had a lobster roll with onion rings, and my wife had a fish sandwich with fries. I drank a Sam Adams Summer Ale and she had a Diet Coke. Our bill, with tip, was $95. LOL!
We have a lot of diner restaurants that are labeled Coney Island. I looked a few different Coney Islands and at all I could get a patty melt and fries for under $12. I’d have to drink water, which is fine. Or I’d go for breakfast and have an omelet and hasbrowns for $7.
Yeah, it’s crazy. And it’s just been the last few months it’s gotten so ridiculous. Sigh. Paris was cheaper than here!
Yeah - the days of the local pizza place being the “value option” seem to have passed.
Here they have had the “Large 2-toppings, chicken, sandwiches etc. for $6.99 apiece…” deal for a while, but it does not include the Brooklyn-style pizza.
For that, it’s like $8 for a large 1-topping. That is my favorite thing Domino’s makes. Have you tried it?
My husband and his brother used to go to Lynwood’s every Sunday for pizza. Back in 1980, when I first met my husband, he kept raving about the place. When he finally took me there, I remember the ambiance was pretty sketchy, but the pizza was delicious.
It’s still wonderfully sketchy in its appearance, and the pizza remains the same. It’s like a time capsule, but for the rising prices.
It’s a national coupon, but a minority of local Domino’s may choose not to offer it. At dominos.com the coupon appears in the lower right corner of the home page for me. It’s also under the coupons tab. The specific deal is quoted below. As noted this can be stacked with other discounts, such as the $3 “tip” discount promotion that was offered during much of this year and/or 25% discount for using a gift card.
“For $7.99 each, carry out all pizzas with 1 topping on any of our 5 crusts, 8-piece wings or boneless chicken, or dips and twists combo. Excludes XL and specialty pizzas”
Yum, In N Out!!! Is it that cheap? It seems like we always spend $40, but my sons and husband get shakes too. I usually just get a double double and nothing else.
I’m relying on D21 for In N Out info. I’m sure it varies by location. I however do not eat there.
In N Out is really inexpensive. We have one down the street but we hardly ever go there because the lines are always long. I prefer a couple of local places that have more of a selection of burgers and other sandwiches (as well as salads) that are mostly under $10. We also have a taqueria close by with delicious tacos that are around $3 each.
I haven’t seen the $6.99 deal you mention. However, I have seen that they sometimes have coupons for a $5.99 large 2-topping, with the code LARRGE599. The last time they offered this deal, whether the code worked or not seemed to be based on email address, rather than location. As I noted in my earlier post, this brought the before tax price down to $2.25 after stacking with other discounts, which may be the best deal for pizza I have seen, assuming you like Domino’s.
I find Domino’s to be just okay – better than most chains, but far from ideal. From best to worst, my preference among chains would be:
- Papa Johns
- Dominos
- Round Table (haven’t had in many years, so may be remembering wrong)
- Pizza Hut
- Blaze
- Little Caesars
- Costco
One of the things I dislike like about Domino’s is I am sensitive to the high sodium level. The higher toppings/crust ratio with Brooklyn style worsens this, with more sodium per severing (assuming servings keep calories roughly constant).
I do like thin crust with certain other pizza vendors. Traditional restaurants can be hit or miss. I rarely like the restaurants offering pizza that doesn’t resemble what I expect in a pizza by either appearance or taste. However, I live within walking distance of a restaurant that offers an excellent Brooklyn style pizza that I enjoy once in a while. I don’t note the sodium issues like Dominos and can taste the higher quality ingredients, particularly tomatoes. However, the restaurant also has its share of negatives, such as not liking the extreme gooey texture or not wanting to deal with the hassle of the restaurant, which contributes to why it is only once in while.
Looking up the menu, the restaurant noted above offers a variety of items for less than $12 including a jumbo slice + drink ($5), sandwich ($10), or most pastas ($10).
I would pay $12 not to eat pizza from those places.
Folks in town complain that the Indian restaurant no longer has a cheap lunch buffet. Friends wanted to meet there for lunch today, and wow - what a nice alternative they have!
OK, it is is $15, above the rule of $12 limit… but I took home food for tomorrow’s lunch. Wish I had taken a photo of the big tray with a large area for main entree (I picked chicken tiki masala, comes with rice and naan) and small green salad. Plus smaller built in cups for the two other small portion entree picks (I picked saag and korma). Plus more little cups for tandoori, fruit, rice pudding.
I’m fine paying more, especially when there is enough for another meal or snack. I’m also fine with sharing appetizer, entree and dessert instead of both of us just ordering entrees.
I ate lunch today at El Mariachi’s in central Iowa. I got 2 chicken burritos (2 beef would have cost the same) with plenty of rice and beans for $8.55 plus a tip. I had water to drink, though I think I could of gotten a Coke and been under the $12.
Do you have an Illegal Pete’s near you? My son is in FoCO so I just looked at the menu and it looks like you can have almost anything there for under $12 as long as you don’t go crazy with add ons.
We have a fabulous brick oven pizza place that has $5 margarita pizzas on Mondays! Actually plenty for two people. And even with a soda, would be under $12 for two.
