What can you tell me about Illinois Tech and/or Chicago in general?

I was recently accepted to Illinois Insitute of Tech and I just want to find out more about the place so I can make an informed decision later on whether or not I want to enroll there. I've never been to the campus or Chicago but I may visit on weekend later just to check it out and see if I'd be comfortable there.

I'd like to hear anything and everything you know about Illinois Tech - residence, people, profs, food, courses, atmosphere - and Chicago as a city. From anyone and everyone! If you've been to Chicago or live in Chicago, just drop a line or two.

Also, I will be an Architecture major if that's relevant to anyone's response.

Thanks!

I'm from Chicago. I have a friend going to IIT. I've heard that the school has a rigorous courseload, being a technical school, but the school is pretty good. Most people's biggest complaint about Chicago is the weather, but seeing as you're from Toronto, there won't be any shock at all. It's a great city, and you'll never run out of things to do.

Thanks for the info.

How is the campus - location and safety wise? Is it right in the downtown core or how far out is it?

I have a friend that goes there and she said that she likes it alot but that the course load is hard. I'm not really sure where IIT is located, but the only areas you REALLY have to worry about in Chicago are the south and west side. The main downtown area is very nice and generally pretty safe as long as you're street smart and stuff. Chicago's a great place to live though and there's really good nightlife for those who go to school down there.

I have friends that go there, and IIT is decidedly on the south side. It's important not to have the crazy suburban assumptions a lot of people make about how dangerous the area is. However, stuff does happen on occasion(ranging from muggings to more violent things). You should take the obvious precautions like not going wandering around alone at night.

What I've heard from my friends about IIT is that it's just as rigorous as the more reknowned schools of its kind but with not nearly as much prestige. I guess you have to decide which matters more to you.

Chicago is great in terms of how much there is to see and do. Chicago is awful, awful, awful in the winter and you will not want to be outside for any length of time. I'm not sure what's available in the immediate vicinity, but it's easy enough to get around.

I live in Chicago and IIT is just about ten minutes away from my house. I don't know much about the school itself, but as for the campus, it's really not that bad. The weather is manageable over time. It's cold during the winters but not so much that you can't deal. It's about three miles south of the Loop, which is just fantastic because there are plenty of things to do downtown. Downtown Chicago is pretty much one of the best places to be-great food, great people, great sights. Cellular field is pretty close by, so if you are into baseball, you might check it out. And as for safety, I've been living in south Chicago for seven years and not once have I felt unsafe. The U of C has a really good police system where if you feel unsafe walking, the police will personally escort you. So just try to not walk into dark alleys in the middle of the night and you'll be just fine.
