I'm really interested in Rice University, and I want to know from any Rice students or alums anything they can tell me that's NOT in the website/brochure. What do you think of Rice?

Look through the various threads starting with 101 reasons to attend Rice.

Hi, commanderkeen! I won’t actually matriculate until the fall, but I’ve spent a decent amount of time on campus, so I’ll give you one aspect of Rice that’s really stuck out to me. Every time I’ve been there, I’ve always felt so welcomed by the students and have been constantly surprised just by how unbelievably nice so many people are over there. In my experience, I’ve never once sensed any sort of snobbish intellectual atmosphere that often gets associated with schools of Rice’s quality. Even my interview was extremely relaxed: at one point, we ended up talking about how excited we both were to go see the Lion King 3D that evening. And my overnight stay even further confirmed how I’d felt about Rice. When it was 1 or 2 in the morning, I pulled out my sleeping bag to, well, go to sleep, and my host told me how he didn’t want his prospies sleeping on the floor. So, he took me one floor down, introduced me to some of his other friends, got me set up on their couch, and all of us just hung out there for another hour after that until we all went to bed. In addition to having the #1 Happiest Students, I’d argue that we’ve got some of the nicest ones as well.

Now, of course, that’s just my own personal experience. But for me, that’s definitely one of the most impressive aspects about Rice that you can’t really gather from a brochure or something along those lines. I hope that helps! :)

I would recommend looking for posts from me, silentsailor, or a number of other current and recently graduated Rice students on these boards. We’ve talked a lot about what being a Rice student (both the good and the bad) is like so I’m sure you could find what you’re looking for with a quick search of for our names. If you can’t find anything post here and I’ll try to give you a better picture, but for now I’ll just make the above recommendation and tell you that, from my experience, our #1 quality of life and #1 happiest students rankings are well-deserved. :)

They treat their ED applicants like crap

what do you mean they treat their ED students like crap?
… i’m applying ED…

fredddddd join our ED applicants thread. Also, I think he’s talking about how they accidently sent a misleading email to students who got deferred, and he was one of them. Nothing that will affect us though.

It was an accident, yes, and even more people from other schools got similar mistake letters. It happens occasionally, unfortunately. Not sure when the last time it happened for Rice prior to last year would have been, though. I wouldn’t worry about the statement.

However, wavylays94 was subsequently accepted to Middlebury College and will be happily attending there in the fall, if I remember reading correctly.

I agree with LastShadow. I too am matriculating this fall and every time I have visited, called, or emailed Rice they have been extremely nice. One of the times I was visiting, my mom and I were lost and trying to find some of the residential colleges. A random guy stopped and asked if we needed help. It turned out he was a sophomore and he lived in one of the residential colleges we were trying to find. He was very helpful and friendly and answered all of our questions. Another thing that made me fall in love with Rice was the large amount of squirrels running around campus. It made me smile every time I saw one.

Been a while, looking through the thread again, thanks for answering, guys! Hard at work on that application–it really is tough to answer specifically when there’s so much I like about Rice!
